Hello There

We are local residents who love the village and Christmas time very much!

That said we feel we must comment on the fabulous Christmas tree erected every year for all to enjoy - BUT the thrown on garish rope lights used to decorate it....arrgghh!! they look awful and do the village a real injustice when compared to Devauden & Mathern villages tress dripping in tiny white twinkling LED lights.

We are not moaners, honest! and are willing to contribute to the cost of a new set of lights as I'm sure other villagers would be. Someone has taken the time to put the tree up and all credit to them - next year let's make our village tree the talk of the town for the right reasons! A pretty village such as ours full of good, warm hearted people deserves it !

Thank you
The Stephens Family

Anne-Marie 01291423687 or email..
The Merton Green Action Group are trying to register the Open Spaces there as Village Greens. We need to preserve the few Open Spaces we have left.
Many Thanks

While exploring the wonders of the internet, I looked up Caerwent village as in 1957/58 I lived with my family for a short while as British subjects evaquees from Egypt as a result of the Suez crisis of 1956 in a camp across the Chepstow road from the village. I often used to walk into Caerwent which I liked, I wonder if  it is still like  the memory I have of it, it was my first impression of a beautiful British village I remember the friendly people, a village fair, the village church and  the tractor ride to Caldicot. I'd like to think so.

During that time I used to travel by bus with other children from the camp and the village to school in Chepstow and I met my two first female friends and sweetheart, Pearl Savage and Carol Jones. Soon after and at short notice I learned that we were moving  away from the area, to Sussex, I was not happy in fact at the time and regretably left without saying my goodbyes I never returned to Caerwent again.

I settled in the London area and now some 53 years later I have decided to keep active, extend my working life and in that time developed many friendships and travelled to most parts of the world, yet I still fondly remember Caerwent.

HELLO, I AM AN OLD FRIEND OF BRIAN AND HIS FAMILY. I AM TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HIS WIFE OR SONS. I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU COULD PASS ON MY EMAIL ADDRESS TO ANY OF THEM. KIND REGARDS, GARY WILLIAMS.

alanlcox@hotmail.com;

I wonder if you can help me.

During the early 1940's my mother and a friend were said to have worked at a munitions factory in or near Waterlooville. Was there such a factory and would it be possible to trace records of those working there at the time?

I should add that although my name is Cox my mother was Dorothy Harrison and her friend Gladys Hill,

I do hope you can help as I am writing a book concerning my mother's life and this period is of great importance.

Thank you in anticipation.

lings@berghapton.wanadoo.co.uk;

I am interested in making contact with someone in Caerwent regarding the late Cecil Stone of Great House Farm, Caerwent, NP26 5AS who died a couple of years ago.

Cecil's family came from my home village Bergh Apton here in Norfolk and had an uncle Aubrey who was killed in WW1 who is on our war memorial.

Cecil came here in 2002 with a lady named Gladys, who may have been his wife or a companion (I'm not sure which), with whom I am very keen to make contact.

I am coming through Caerwent on Wednesday 18th August (two weeks hence) and would very much like to contact Gladys if I can find her . .  Cecil had photos of the Stone family here that may be of value to our local history archive, and I'm hoping that Gladys will have them or remember them.

I'd be very grateful if you put me in touch with someone who can help me

Thanks
