What a brilliant web-site! I went to the school in the mid `50s but there seems to be a lot of people missing from that era. Many of the photos show students a year or so older than I am.
I went to the propellant Factory school, then the village school and then to Rogiet for a year or two before the "11 Plus" in about 1960.
Other names that spring to mind are Lee Morgan, Peter Brandon, Rosemary Titcombe and John Hillier to name a few.
Now I am soaking up the sun on the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales (Unfortunately covered in bush fire smoke at present.)

This is a great site! I can remember visiting Caerwent as a little boy. I was always walking in the area. Is it true that there was a tramp living in the Five Lanes in the 1970s? I never found him! I am researching my family history. They are called Bonning and lived in Caerwent posibly 1918 to 1950s. They were called Henry, Clara and daughter Sarah Marie (Sally) Bonning. Does any one have any info or memories of them? Thanks.

Hello,
I have seen several people with the surname Wenzel on your interesting pages. My grandmother was a Wenzel. It is not a common name, I wondered if we might be related.
Please do email if you are also curious.
thanks.

Excellent web site. I returned back to Caerwent four years years ago. I used to play with Anthony, Rob and Dave Morgan in my youthful days!

Would it be possible to advertise on your web site?? I am starting up a business on the IT solutions.
Best Regards, Mark

Congratulations on your successful shoe box project.

I was so suprised to see where your gifts are going, as my husband's father was born in the village of Cluj in Transylvania, Roumania. He was born in this country (the USA) but returnd to Roumania with his sister to be schooled in Transylvania.

I assume you are aware that during the Caucesciu reign many of the thousands of children in orphanages throughout the country suffered from AIDS because of the unbelievably filthy conditions there.

A number of Americans (and I assume ohers) have adopted those children without being informed that they were aids victims.

Buna fortuna (good luck).

My sister was Averil Dean, now Morgan. We lived at Dinham Road. Averil can name all the front row (girls) in the Caerwent schooldyas 1953 photograph.
From left to right; Averil Dean; Mary Evans; Denise Bradfield; Vyrlie Drewell; Margaret Morgan (not Vera, she was Margaret's younger sister); Wendy Hicks; June Evans, now deceased; Marion Edwards; Carol Jones; Carol Lewis; Mary Jones.
Hope that's helpful.

Thanks Colin - the school photograph page has been amended accordingly.
Best wishes - Bryan

My parents were Harold and Lilian. Father was a chemical plumber at RNPF. He may be best remembered for producing the variety shows at the Welfare 1946-54. I went to Caerwent School 1946-51 and Larkfield 1951-5. Then I went to work in Bristol and was never heard of again! I played football for the factory youth team and Caerwent youth team, the latter in the Caldicot & District League.
Now I am retired, living in Alton Pancras, famous for being the source of the (River) Piddle, north of Dorchester.
If there is still anyone alive (or dead for that matter) who remembers me and is not afraid to admit it, I would like to hear from you.

Brin (not Bryn!) and I have spent a very enjoyable hour looking at all the photographs of him and his school friends and family, including several of his father (Walter).
Excellent site - must have been a lot of work but great for those of us who know Caerwent as well as those just visiting! Congratulations!
If you're speaking to Mabel Hudson give her our very best wishes - she still doesn't look a day over 60!

Dear Bryan,
May I first say how delightful your website is. It is clear & concise, yet keeps the reader's interest.
I was particularly taken by the article on 'The Factory'. As a young boy my mother & I would go to Cardiff, from London on the Black & White coaches.
They often stopped next door to 'The Factory' to refresh the passengers. I was always intrigued by the camouflage which covered the tall buildings next door and I wondered what went on there.
Now I know I realise what a remarkable story it is.
Thanks once again for including such a scholarly article.
Kind Regards
Eric Archer

I've been popping in and out of the site for quite some time now, and particularly appreciate the school photographs. I married a Caerwent girl, Mary Evans, but sadly lost her last year. We have four daughters and two grandsons. Each site visit I look to see if there are any further pictures of Mary (there are 3 at the moment). My thanks to all who have put the site together. I hope to visit some time this year.

ALL? There's just me George! Thanks for your kind words - Bryan

After five years of study on Dark Ages history, Derrick's tour of Gray Hill, St. Tathan Chuch, Llanmellin Hill Fort, and the Roman walls was impressive and informative. I recommend these tours to anyone. He is a knowledgeable guide - and one who is quite personable I might add!

Hi Bryan,
What software did you use to build this site?
Thanks, Mark.
Hi Mark - I don't use software, I just write the html files as I go. I use a Fuji 6900 and Photoshop for the graphics, CuteHTML software for syntax checking and CuteFTP for fast bulk uploading.
Best wishes, Bryan

Dr. JOHN CROPPER pioneer of malaria and mosquito research in Palestine. Greenberg Z. Public Health Laboratory, Ministry of Health, Jerusalem.

Dr. John Cropper was born on September 17th, 1864, at Guisborough, Yorkshire, England. He obtained his medical degree from Cambridge University in 1891. I am researching the following: The brother of my grandfather's grandfather died at Llanvair Discoed recently. There was found among the belongings of Mr William Harvey Mullett, a book containing the story of his life, written in a style which leaves no doubt that the deceased man made the most of his spare time in improving his education.
The whole work is dedicated to Miss Micklethwait of Penheim, April 10th 1895 and the top of the opening page bears the French proverb - 'Rein n'est beau que le vrai'.
One gathers from the book that Mullett was born in China Hall cottage, Deptford Road, London on September 8th 1837, at which time his father was confidential traveller to a firm of wholesale paper makers, Upper Thames St, London and the Mills, Monmouth.

I have just enjoyed a trip down memory lane via the Caerwent web site.I'm pleased to see "The Tump" restored, but I remember it with conker trees on top.
I was particularly interested to see the picture of John Peach and Laureen Jones as the carnival king and queen in 1939. I have a picture of the courtladies. I was one of them. It's on its way to you by snail mail,as I have not yet mastered the art of sending pictures by email. Thanks for a really good website Bryan.

I have just discovered your site while chasing ancestors - in particular a William Harvey Mullett who was living (and probably died)in LLanvair Discoed early in the last century. He was a sailor and dedicated a diary recording his adventures, to a Miss Micklethwaite of Llanvair Discoed in 1895.
Perhaps he was the parish clerk listed in Kelly's directory of Monmouthshire for 1901. Do you have any history buffs who could pass on any clues?

Just been back to the site after many months - some great new photos, especially the RNPF staff shots.
The Maggie Warren in the 1946 lab shot I knew as 'Auntie Peggie' - she came from Birkenhead same as my parents.
I must try to find some of my old slides and get them scanned - but 'retirement' seems to make one busy!

I have just looked in after quite a spell. Reading the 25 years page it is to my interest see the reference to Elizabeth Fry. She was in fact my Grandmother, and her Daughter Gwynneth was my Aunt.
I lived at Llanfair discoed for 17 years until I joined the Royal Navy in 1950, and still have many happy memories of Llanfair, Caerwent and also Llanvaches. I sent in a photo of Llanfair Discoed back last year, showing the Greenhouses.
I can picture where it was taken, in 1945 in the castle grounds even now, just opposite Kemeys Cottage where we lived. A lot of the names mentioned I remember. Thanks for a good website,
Ray.

Thanks for those wonderful photographs. I'm sure that 'my' Hudsons must be among those earliest ones.
I'm looking for descendants of John and Alice (?) Hudson (neé Randall). Their many children included Bert, Lizzie, Alice, Edith and an illegitimate grandson Tom.
