Congratulations, Bryan. Your site is excellent. As a map enthusiast, I particularly enjoyed that portion, and I really loved the Roman walls. I would love to see a photo looking down the wall. It seems to be pretty extensive, but, of course, I can't tell how high it is! Good luck with the project. Kindest regards, Jodie

Thankyou all in Caerwent village for your support and kindness to Rod and I since the death of Chris. A special thankyou to the youngsters in the youth club who worked so hard to raise money for the lovely bench to remember him. I am so glad he had such good friends. Rod and I were very touched by this gesture, as I am sure Chris would have been.

Very good site - nice to 'top-up' on news and views. As a native of St Brides, please could you consider extending the site to include pictures and history from St Brides, Crick and Llanvair as well as Caerwent?
Thanks for the note Janet! I continually try to emphasise the Community aspect
of this website - but if I get no input from any of the communities or community
organisations, then you won't see anything about them!
I'll set up the pages for any subject under the sun, but: No data - No page.
Take advantage of it folks - it's your website! Best wishes Bryan

Having been born in 1928 at Waunfawr, the house adjacent to the launderette, and living in the village until 1957, I find the Caerwent website extremely interesting, and must congratulate all concerned in producing such a detailed and infomative site.
My grandfather was Moses Adams, a farmer, and my mother was a shopkeeper. My father Harry Jones ran a milk retailing business from these premises from 1926 to approximately 1960. He collected milk from the local farms and initially delivered it to customers by carrying it around the houses in milk buckets, and measuring it out into customer's jugs.
Delivery was initially by horse and cart and later by motor vehicle. He delivered to customers in Caerwent, Caldicot, Rogiet and the Royal Naval Propellant Factory.
I hope this is of interest, and keep up the good work.
Regards, Hiley Jones.

Thanks for the website, I checked it out and found the article on the history of The
Factory - my father was an electrician and worked on the building of the factory at
Caerwent during the Second World War, working for Sir Robert McAlpine, who, as I
understand it, was living in Caerwent at the time. Apart from the fact that as far as I
knew it was some sort of munitions factory, I had no idea about what went on there, so I
am delighted to be able to get some background information on it after all these years.
Quite how my father ended up there I don't know, as he was from Oxford but he met my
mother, who lived in Newport, through friends one night at the Beaufort Hotel, Chepstow
and they married at the end of the war.
Monmouthshire will always be home although I have spent many more years away than I ever
have living there - I envy you!
Regards

Hi, I have just found this site after receiving an email from my cousin Georgina Waters
in Canada.
I was born in Llanfair Discoed in 1933, and lived there until I joined the Royal Navy at
the age of 17 in 1950. I lived most of my life there in Kemeys Cottage, then the top house
in the village, opposite the castle (my playground) and just above the church, but I was
born at the cottage where a Miss Hart later had a sweet shop. I remember the two Miss
Pritchards at their Post Office, the next house down from Kemeys Cottage. They took over
from Postie Wear when he retired.
I now live in North Cornelly, in the County of Bridgend but have lovely memories of the
village, and the school where I spent all my school life, leaving at the age of 14 to
start work on the land at Lower Llanmelin Farm for Mr Harold Parker. I worked there until
I went away to the Royal Navy.

In 'Caerwent War Memorial' I found short biography of Captain Dr. John Cropper who
drowned with the "Britannic", written by his grandson John Harvey.
Dr. Cropper worked in Palestine during the years 1902-1908 (at least) and he published
several medical articles mainly on malaria in Palestine, first in Acca, then in Jerusalem
and after it in Rammallah town. (I have all of them). In one of the article there is a
note that it was done as part of his M.D. thesis from Cambridge University.
I am interested in the history of malaria in Palestine, and I will be very grateful to get
the address of Dr. Cropper's grandson John Harvey in order to receive more data (and may
be the full M.D. work).
I would like, also to receive permission to use the picture of Dr. Cropper in an article
in Hebrew I intended to write about him. ZG
Thankyou for your message, Dr Greenberg. I have passed your enquiry to
the appropriate quarter for action. BM

Wow, what a great site! Congratulations! You could never imagine how much help sites
like this are to we people living far across the sea.
My great-great-grandparents were Lewis WILLIAMS (born bout 1806) who married Ann LEWIS
(born about 1806) on the 2nd of July 1831 in Caldicot, Monmouthshire.
He was an Agricultural Labourer, so he could have come from anywhere. In the 1841 census
they were living in Crick (Ballan). I am unsure if Ballan is a road or property !!!
I have hit a brick wall, I can't get back any further.
Their sons Edward WILLIAMS (born about 1835) and Henry Lewis WILLIAMS (born 26th November
1836 in Crick, Monmouthshire) came to Victoria, Australia & settled in Ballarat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching family history, and looking for info on my great grandfather's
maternal side.
He was the Reverend James Ernest Woodall who later became Archdeacon. It is believed that
he was christened at Caerwent,Monmouthshire, on the 4th of April, 1872.
He met Bishop John Horden when he was a boy and was influenced to take up divinity studies
as a result.
He emigrated to Canada in 1902, sailing out of Stromness Harbour (in the Orkney Islands)
by way of Hudson Bay.
His parents were possibly named Thomas Simon and Elizabeth Woodall.
Can you help please? Perhaps some records in the local parish or other local sources? Many
