ILLUSTRATED TALK:

The Silures

Tuesday October 14th at 7.30pm

That means some of us, or at least our ancestors, were here before the Romans came and are still here! Dr. Ray Howell, Reader in History and Historical Archaeology at the University of Wales, Newport, is a noted authority on our local Celtic tribe, and will share some of his knowledge with us in the Westgate Barns, Caerwent.

Visits to the R.N.P.F. Caerwent Factory site

The little tour of September 7th was well attended and enjoyed by all, from those reunited after a 50 year break to those who were complete newcomers.  The Welfare Centre, in spite of its dereliction, was very impressive to visit.  We thought that its stage rivalled that of the Dolman Theatre in Newport. As explained previously, serious tours of the factory and old villages within the security fence are difficult to arrange due to the level of military activity.  I am therefore collecting names of people who would be interested in a 3 hour tour, most likely on a Saturday morning in the spring.  Please e-mail me if you would like to be on the list and please back this up with a phone call, as this e-mail has been unreliable recently, and if you have already e-mailed me, please send again to this address as I have lost two names recently!

Publications

The Trust has recently reprinted some articles by the Rev. Leslie Gruffydd-Jones and his wife, taken from the Caerwent Community Newsletters from 1974 – 1977. If anyone has a photograph of Rev. Gruffydd-Jones which we could copy to include in the booklet, we would be most grateful.

If you wish to purchase a copy of this publication, please contact the Secretary.
