The Midwinter Sunrise

Sunday December 21st

We’ll be up to see the sun rise from the prehistoric alignment on Gray Hill, about ten past eight.  The effect should be very similar on 22nd or 23rd.  Best footwear is wellies.  Meet at the Standing Stones (or else the triangle on the south side of the hill at 7.50am, OS map reference is 442930).  If you are not sure about the starting point or are not a good walker, ring for advice.

The Gwent Metal Detectorists treated us to a stunning exhibition of their finds in S.E. Gwent.  Unfortunately our own attendance was rather low.  I wish we could compile a full list of things which have shown up all over our district.  Fortunately the Portable Antiquities Scheme is now encouraging all detectorists to come forward with their finds.  Shown below are a musket ball, two buttons and a thimble detected by Mike Connor at Caerwent Brook.  Also, from the Roman era (but not from metal detecting), the brooch from Caerwent Churchyard and a coin from Brockwells Farm.  N.B. metal detecting is not allowed on the sites of Ancient Monuments                                                                                                       JN
