Thanks to our Community Council, February has been a month of good news for us. Firstly Jon Hall of Almondsbury has been appointed Consultant to carry through a detailed planning study for the Visitor Centre based on the old school. Jon operates under the name Heritage Resource Agency and will be bringing in a number of other specialists in support. Secondly Shirenewton Community Council has agreed to operate jointly with our own in the management of the woodlands around the Llanmelin Hill Fort. Thus Cadw will take on the ownership but Caerwent gets full powers to manage its Poor Wood and everybody will benefit from improved access to the woods and Hill Fort. Representatives of the Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust have been very supportive over this and the Cadw staff have put a lot of effort into the project already.
Walk on the Bertholey ridge
Sunday 12th March 10.30am
A walk from the north end of the ridge, above Bertholey House and in the direction of “Will of Wentwood’s House in Ruins”. Hopefully there will be some wild daffodils to see and it will give us an overview of the largest swathe of the Forest that has recently come into the ownership of the Woodland Trust. Meet at the small parking area at the summit of the road from Parc Seymour to Usk (on the west side of the road, map reference 413945) or if in doubt meet at the car park of the Wentwood Inn at 10.15am. Walking time 1˝ hours.

Forum and Basilica which are not currently on display. Meet in the Augustus & Gwen John room of
the National Museum at 10.15am. Parking

a small number of visitors will be possible – please book as soon as

In Search of King Arthur
talk - Monday 10th April 7.30pm at the Wentwood Inn
Chris Barber,
author of a number of books about our wonderful district, has been researching
the origin of King Arthur for many years.
It turns out that the original Arthur was from around here. Unfortunately he was hijacked by south west
England. Forget Spamalot – Chris will
start to put the record straight in a most informative talk!
Llanmelin Hill Fort
walk Saturday 22nd April at
2.30pm
Daryl Williams carried out a geophysical survey two years ago but most
of us have yet to hear about it. Here’s
our chance – meet at the Cadw car park Caerwent 2.30pm.
Don’t forget – we take every
care with the preparation of our walks and visits, but you participate at your
own risk
