Around the beginning of February two important decisions must be made with respect to the history of Caerwent. Well, not exactly the History, because we can’t alter that, but the accessibility of it. Firstly a Consultant must be appointed to carry through the detailed feasibility study for the project based on the old school. This is now known as the Caerwent Heritage Visitor Centre project and it is intended to cover not only ancient times including of course the Roman period, but our recent Community history too. Incidental provision should be possible for the Parish Church and other Community groups.
The second crunch comes over the woodlands around the Llanmelin Hill Fort. Cadw are at last poised to take over the ownership of them from the MoD, but need the active support of Caerwent and Shirenewton Community Councils. The outcome should be that Caerwent gets full powers to manage its Poor Wood and that we will all benefit from improved access to the woods and Hill Fort.
Both these schemes are initiatives of Caerwent Community Council, which our Trust has wholeheartedly been supporting.
Walk on the Bertholey ridge
Sunday 12th March 10.30am
A walk from the north end of the ridge, above Bertholey House and in the direction of “Will of Wentwood’s House in Ruins”. Hopefully there will be some wild daffodils to see and it will give us an overview of the largest swathe of the Forest that has recently come into the ownership of the Woodland Trust. Meet at the small parking area at the summit of the road from Parc Seymour to Usk (on the west side of the road, map reference 413945) or if in doubt meet at the car park of the Wentwood Inn at 10.15am. Walking time 1˝ hour.

“The Arches”
It’s the
name of the last County Farms property on the way out of Caerwent towards
Newport, but we can’t see any arches!
Was the Roman Road carried across the Neddern/Cas Troggy Brook by
arches, and is there a picture? Help
please!
