Caerwent Historic Trust

NEWSLETTER
October 2005

Causes for celebration:

(1) Wentwood Forest Sale – the Woodland trust has achieved its aim of £100,000 in pledges so it seems certain that its efforts to safeguard large tracts of the forest will succeed - provided that we all pay up!

(2) Visitor Centre proposal – a further grant has been secured to do an in-depth feasibility study towards the conversion of the former Caerwent School into a Museum/community facility. We would like to thank the Community Council for taking on the lead in this matter, and members of the Parish Church for their continuing interest.

No activities are planned during October but . . . if you have any old photographs of people or places, even old newspaper cuttings, please let us scan them for our archive.

Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will be held on Monday November 7th at 8.00pm. Venue hopefully to be the Wentwood Inn, but to be confirmed! We would especially be glad of help with upkeep of our library collection, the nucleus of which is in the Parish Church, and with subs/membership records. Do you have any photos or other mementoes of the Wentwood Inn, ie The Austral or Pat’s café?

Subscriptions: the AGM is the great time for paying this year’s subs (if you are late) and next year’s (if you are early)! Membership is £5 per household, £3 single persons, please pay to any Trustee.

Advance notices

Talk on the association of Caerwent with early Christianity in Britain – may have started with Caractacus pre 100AD – will be offered late November/early December

Walk across the factory site to Dinham was cancelled from the Heritage Days programme. We will hold it on a Saturday morning in the winter – please contact us a.s.a.p. if you are interested so that we can seek a date which will suit as many people as possible.
