Caerwent Historic Trust

NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2003

Dear Friends,

The talk on Christianity in Caerwent and the walk to Dinham Castle were both very well attended. Members who haven't paid yet are reminded that the sub is £5 per family. The walks etc are not restricted to inembers - everybody is welcome but an occasional contribution of £1 per family towards our costs would be welcome.

Castle Troggy & Llangwm Church
Sunday 13th April.
Drive and short walk, 2.30pm
The castle, at the source of the Neddern/Cas Troggy brook, is quite obscure to visit although it's not far from a road. St Jerome's at Llangwm has Green Men and a wonderfully carved oak screen. If you've never seen it "you haven't lived". Two hours, very little walking, meet Wentwood Reservoir car park at 2.30pm.

The Piercefield Walk
Sunday 27th April, 2.30pm
This spectacular walk was set up 200 years ago by Valentine Morris, a millionaire who later went bust! It was reopened in the 1970s and is now the first stage of the \Vye Valley Walk. We shall start from Chepstow and walk through the Giant's Cave to the car park at the foot of the Wynd Cliff. Meet at the car park of Chepstow Leisure Centre, down by the bottle bank, at 2.30pm. Walking time probably one-and-a-half hours. We will return drivers to the starting point, who can then retrieve their passengers, who might have gone on to the top of the Wynd Cliff by then (365 steps)!

Llanmelin Hill Fort and the 'Poor Wood'
Saturday 10th May, 2.30pm
The Hill Fort is thought to have served as some sort of capital for the Silurian tribes before the Romans came. It has been attractive to visit every since Cadw did a lot of work on it two years ago. Hopefully the bluebells will be adding to the scene. The visit will be led by lan McFarlane who lives nearby and has collected thousands of Stone Age flints from the neighbouring fields. He'll bring some of these to show us and offer some ideas as to what they tell us about the prehistory of our area. Agile participants may choose to scramble down through the Poor Wood afterwards. Meet at the new CADW car park in Caerwent at 2.30pm.

Please note: Though we take every care with the preparation of our walks and visits, you participate at your own risk. Walk Co-ordinators: Derrick Williams and John Nettleship

Best wishes
