NEWSLETTER

May 2002

Dear Friends,

We are still anxious to collect old newspaper cuttings, photos etc so if you are having a clear-out please think of us. You can lodge items with us for keeps or on loan.

We also have the beginnings of a collection of objects in the hope that one day we will get a museum in Caerwent.

Our reference library now stands at over 60 items plus a large number of past Newsletters. It's surprising how much has been published about the Caerwent area in quite recent years, and how little of it seems to be made known to us locally.

For example, some of us remember the village street being dug up in 1971 to provide mains sewage. The archaeological report on this did not appear till 1984 and included the news that the remains of 13 people had been found buried under the road. As the trench was only 4 feet wide we can assume there are about 40 people still under the road waiting to be discovered! Probably most of them were Highway Engineers responsible for designing unsuccessful traffic calming schemes in Roman and Medieval times...

The conclusions of recent investigations will be explained during the guided walks we are conducting - we hope most residents will join in one or two over the year.

Our understanding of the Caerwent Training Area site has improved a lot in recent months. Some of us have been studying the ancient sites whilst Don Waring has been finding out about the Factory and is now in a position to tell us what the various buildings were used for. All this will be covered in the walks planned for June 1st and 2nd.

Best wishes
