POLICE NOTES

SEPTEMBER 2001

Most readers, if they haven't already done so, will be going on holiday quite shortly. I hope you will have a very enjoyable time.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

At the time of writing there appears to have been some problems with travel insurance policies underwritten by some Lloyds brokers. I know, because I've just found out that my own holiday insurance is invalid!
Please check your travel insurance with your travel agent or Lloyds. There is a FREEFONE number for Lloyds which is 0800-9175971.

RECENT CRIME PATTERNS IN CAERWENT

Unfortunately, thefts from sheds in this area have been on the increase. There have been several instances in Caerwent recently where people have seen and even chased persons found climbing over their garden fences or in the garden.
If you see anything suspicious try to remember what they look like - colour, sex, height, build and what they were wearing, then call the police immediately and give as much information as possible.
Officers can then try to catch them. It appears that on several occasions in Caldicot persons have seen someone in their garden and climbing over fences and not called the police!
PLEASE CALL US - WE LIKE CATCHING CRIMINALS!

DRUG INFORMATION

No one drug is more harmful than others - the law and maximum penalties reflect this. Drugs are classified into three classes, 'A', 'B' and 'C'.

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 outlines the following maximum penalties:

Possession of a Class A Drug
7 Years imprisonment or a fine, or both.
Supply of a Class A Drug
Life imprisonment or fine, or both.
Possession of a Class B Drug
5 Years imprisonment or a fine, or both.
Supply of a Class B Drug
14 years imprisonment or a fine, or both.
Possession of a Class C Drug
2 Years imprisonment or a fine, or both.
Supply of a Class C Drug
5 years imprisonment or a fine, or both.

CLASS 'C' DRUGS

There are presently over 130 different drugs in this class, including:
  • Anabolic steroids (not for personal use)
  • Medical preparations
  • Painkillers
  • Barbiturates
  • Sedatives and anti-depressants.
Anabolic steroids are often used by body-builders etc. Over the long term they produce an increase in size and weight coupled with changes in sexual characteristics. They often make the user become obsessed with supplements and nutrition. Some people on prescribed medical preparations become psychologically dependent on them.

These drugs include, amongst many others, PETHIDINE, MORPHINE SULPHATE ('MST'), DICONAL, TEMGESIC, CODEINE, SODIUM AMYTAL, TUINAL, SECONAL SODIUM, TEMAZEPAN and DIAZEPAM.

If you are on any prescribed drug and you feel you have a problem then contact your G.P.

Next month I'll be outlining Class 'B' drugs and offering guidance on symptoms to look out for.

Finally, try to remember to keep your cycles, cars, sheds, garages and other outbuildings locked when not in use. Also, never leave your house unlocked when you go out and always set the burglar alarm.

I hope that you all had an enjoyable school holiday break.

Best wishes.

Ashley Turner.
PC 737, Community Police Constable
