POLICE NOTES

JULY & AUGUST 2001

At the time of writing this article the weather has been wonderful and summer really is with us. Unfortunately, this is the busiest time of the year for opportunist thefts from cars, sheds, gardens etc. Try to remember to be security conscious and lock doors and valuable items away from sight when leaving your home and visiting summer outdoor events.

I've been receiving lots of feedback on my recent articles, all of which I welcome. Some of the feedback has been critical but the majority has been positive. My articles are not intended to "lecture" readers but to inform them of recent events and points of criminal law. When advising on points of law I have to start at the basics. I do this to assist younger readers whom, I hope, have access to the article.

CRIME PATTERNS
Throughout the CALDICOT POLICE AREAA there has been a seasonal rise in thefts from sheds, garages etc. A number of valuable mountain bikes have been stolen. There is a facility to have pedal cycles POSTCODE STAMPED which makes their recovery and return easier.
Contact me or Caldicot police station on 01291-430999 for further advice.

SUBSTANCE AND DRUG ABUSE

This month I'm offering advice on

GASES, GLUES AND AEROSOLS.

This category of substance abuse covers:
  • Lighter gas refills
  • Disposable gas lighters
  • Aerosols containing hair spray, deodorants, air fresheners etc.
  • Tins or tubes of glue
  • Some paints, usually solvent based
  • Thinners and correcting fluids.
HOW IS IT TAKEN?
Usually sniffed or breathed into the lungs from a cloth. Gas products are sometimes squirted directly into the back of the throat.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS?
  • Effects feel very similar to being very drunk
  • Users feel thick-headed, dizzy, giddy and dreamy
  • Users may hallucinate
  • Effects don't last long but users can remain intoxicated all day by repeating the dose.
THE HEALTH RISKS
  • Nausea, vomiting, blackouts and heart problems that can be fatal
  • Squirting gas products down the throat mpy cause the body to produce fluid that floods the lungs and this can cause instant death
  • There is a risk of suffocation if the substance is inhaled from a plastic bag over the head
  • Accidents can happen when the user is high because their senses are affected
  • Long term abuse of glue can damage the brain, liver and kidneys
A POINT OF LAW
It is illegal for shopkeepers to sell to under 18s or to people acting for them if they suspect the product is intended for abuse.
This form of substance abuse is not as common as it was several years ago owing to the easier access to other drugs.
If you are concerned about a relative or friend regarding drug or substance abuse, try to encourage them to seek help or contact me.

In the September this topic will be further discussed and will include TRANQUILISER ABUSE.

I hope you have a crime free July and August.

Best wishes.

Ashley Turner.
