NEWSLETTER

JANUARY 2000

I hope that everyone had a happy Christmas and that you were not a victim of crime. No doubt some readers were bought nice new cycles TVs, mobile phones etc., so it's a good time to offer some crime prevention advice that may deter these items being stolen, and greatly assist the police in returning them to you if they are.

1. POSTCODE YOUR PROPERTY
In only 9% of cases where something has been stolen is the property returned. Mark items with an indelible identification, showing your postcode and the number of your house or flat or the first two letters of its name. Use a permanent etching tool or an ULTRA-VIOLET marking pen.

2. PEDAL CYCLES
These can be postcoded using a metal stamping set and bright "POSTCODED" stickers are then placed on the cycle to deter theft. The police will do this for you so long as an adult signs a disclaimer form beforehand. Contact Caldicot Police Station (0129l-430999) or P.C.Turner if you wish to have a cycle "POSTCODED"

3. OTHER VALUABLES
Take pictures of all valuable items like jewellery and silverware and write down the serial numbers of your TV, VIDEO, HI-FI, computer and camera equipment etc. Keep this information updated and in a safe place. Also keep the receipts for these items.

4. INSURANCE
Remember to keep items fully insured and increase the level of cover regularly.

5. MOBILE PHONES
If you have a mobile phone, only give your telephone number to friends you trust, and ask them not to pass it on to anyone else.
Unfortunately, people receiving abusive and threatening voice or text messages on a mobile phone is becoming an increasing problem.

MEET YOUR LOCAL CONSTABLE

On Sunday 14th January I will be available to meet and speak with anyone who has concerns or information concerning crime at the following times and places:

11.30am - 1.00pm, at THE WOODLAND TAVERN, LLANVAIR DISCOED.

2.00pm - 3.00pm at CAERWENT VILLAGE HALL.

At the last session I held only TWO people came to see me, so "DON'T BE SHY!"
I will also have with me crime prevention publications and information on drugs and alcohol abuse.

I wish you all a happy New Year.
