About MENCAP...

Mencap works with people with a learning disability to fight discrimination. It campaigns to ensure that their rights are recognised and that they are respected as individuals.

Learning Disability
Learning disability is a lifelong condition which results from damage to the brain before, during or after birth, or from genetic or chromosome factors (like Down's syndrome).

Campaigning
Mencap's roots lie in campaigning. People with a learning disability are still disadvantaged by discrimination and under-funding of community care. Mencap campaigns locally, nationally and in Europe to raise the profile of learning disability issues. Mencap also publishes a campaigning newspaper called Viewpoint.

Services
We provide residential, education and employment services, leisure opportunities and individual support and advice for people with a learning disability, their families and carers.

Gateway
Mencap's leisure arm, Gateway provides a variety of opportunities for personal and social development. Gateway has 700 clubs and projects around the country providing activities such as sport, music, dance and drama.

Membership
Mencap is a national membership organisation, which is committed to involving people with a learning disability at every level.
