The Christmas Shopping night that we held during the month was a huge success. The hall looked lovely, packed with a good variety of craft stalls, as well as plants, chocolates and pizzas. There was something for everyone and plenty of choice. Our thanks to Crown Hill Nursery for their flower arranging demonstrations. We were very pleased with the numbers of people that came along - over 200! As the night proved to be so popular, we will be looking at arranging another one next year. However, there are some lessons to be learned - we did not expect people to turn up in the numbers they did so early on, and will need to have better control of the traffic and parking - other than that, a very successful evening. It was nice to see so many people using the hall. We met with an officer of Monmouthshire County Council during the month to look at the modifications that we will need to make to the hall to allow for disabled access, toilets and parking. We are hoping to be awarded a grant during the next year which will allow us to start the work - this will be a major project for the Playing Fields. The other major expense that we are planning for next year is Upgrading the play equipment and installing safety surfacing. The quote that we have for this work is £15,000 - again we will be applying for grant aid, with the likelihood of paying 25% of the costs ourselves. As you can see, these will be two major items of expenditure during the coming 12 months. You will see the village Christmas tree lit up on the crossroads any day now. For those who are not aware of it, the tree is a joint venture with the Playing Fields Association paying for the tree and the lights, and Caerwent Community Council funding the electricity costs. It is an expense that is well worth the trouble as it looks so beautiful on dark winter nights.
