It doesn't seem possible that the summer is nearly over and we're heading towards Autumn. We always know when the summer is on it's way out because that's the time of Caerwent Show. I hope everyone has made a note of the date in their diaries - Saturday 7 September. It promises to be a good day for everyone - there's the car boot sale as well as trade and craft stands, also many stalls being run on behalf of local organisations. There will be plenty of fun for children as well as entertainment for adults - a real family day out. The Flower and Vegetable Show will open at lpm- we need lots of exhibits entered in the Show, so get hold of a schedule and sort out your entries. There are children's sections as well as adults. This is a village show (not Show standard) - we are interested in seeing the best of flowers, fruit and vegetables grown in gardens within the community, as well as examples of art, craft and cookery. There will be a full write up of Show prize winners in the next Newsletter. Looking beyond the Show, the Events Sub-Committee has been hard at work and has arranged a dance on 5 October, with a live band at £5 per ticket, please contact Toni Prangley (424262), Jennifer Cox (430717) or myself (421307) for tickets - payable on booking please. Book early as there are 120 tickets and several of them have gone already. There will be a Hallowe'en Disco on I November, for ages up to 7 (from 6 - 7.30pm) and 8+ (from 7.30-9pm). £2.50 per ticket to include hot dog and drink. There will be plenty of fum and games for the youngsters, as well as a fancy dress prize. We would also like to put on an event for the older members of the community, but don't quite know what to do. If there is something particular that appeals to the older residents - please contact me to let me know and we'll do our best to oblige. We have carried out a survey of maintenance that is required both in and around the hall and playing field and have come up with a list of 40 jobs to be done! We have already made a start on some of them and intend to continue with a work gang on Sunday I September from 10.30am - prior to the Show. If anybody would like to come along to help they will be more than welcome. Earlier in the year we had a lot of offers of help from local people - this is an opportunity for you! We have two main projects that will take priority for the next couple of years. They are upgrading the hall to allow disabled access and toilet provision (cost around £30,000), as well as refurbishing the play equipment and laying safety surfacing (cost around £15,000). Obviously we will be applying for grant aid to assist us with the costs as we don't have that amount of money available - but we will be expected to contribute towards the costs. We have our first meeting with officers of Monmouthshire County Council to look at disabled facilities in early September and wish to include the views of local disabled people - if you would like to be involved in this, please let me know. May I remind hall hirers that when collecting or returning the hall keys, they must abide by the agreed times (especially when returning keys) so that they are available for the next hirers - handing keys in late becomes a tiresome problem. It has been brought to our notice once again that local residents are allowing their dogs to foul on the Playing Fields and that they are not disposing of the mess afterwards. The Playing Fields are now being used twice a week by the Mini Football Teams from Caldicot Castle, and we have received complaints from parents that the youngsters are going home from games with dog mess on their football kits We are sure that you will realise there are great health risks involved here, and we do ask you please: IF YOU ALLOW YOUR DOG TO USE THE FIELD AS A TOILET WOULD YOU PLEASE DISPOSE OF THE RESULTING MESS PROPERLY. TAKE THE OFFENDING MESS HOME WITH YOU, OR PUT IT INTO A PLASTIC BAG AND PUT IT IN THE BIN ON THE PLAYING FIELDS. Please note: Playing Fields Committee meetings will be held on the THIRD MONDAY OF EACH MONTH from now on, at 7:30pm in the hall Yours sincerely, Hilary Hilary Counsell, Secretary Telephone 01291-421307 |
