Caerwent Playing Fields Association

NEWSLETTER

July and August 2002

The Golden Jubilee celebrations seem to have been over for a long time - it's surprising how quickly the time rolls on.

The day of activities that we had on the playing field went really well. We tried to put on something for everyone and I think we were successful at that.
We were lucky that the sun came outjust in time for Wally to organise the sports afternoon for the youngsters - it was a close call!

The picnic tea went down very well, so many people donated plates of food that in the end there was plenty for everyone - with several adults benefitting as well!

The tea dance in the hall was lovely - not too many dancers, but several people enjoyed the music and the well remembered songs, they also enjoyed a couple of glasses of sherry and yet more cakes.

Then it all ended up with the Rock 'n' Roll dance in the evening, which allowed everyone to kick their heels up - those that had the energy left to do it!

Very many thanks to all the people who contributed their time and energy to make the day such a success, to those who contributed food, and to our sponsors who made financial contributions. We couldn't have done it without you:

Bennetts Farm Shop
Caerwent Community Council
Caerwent Garage
Caerwent Post Office
Coach & Horses Inn
Consultkt Photography
DCM Contractors
Evans & Clarke (Caldicot Tuesday market)
Neil Williams (Painter & Decorator)
Northgate Inn
Whitewall Kennels

At the last Playing Fields Committee meeting it was agreed that we put the profit made on the dance towards purchasing two sets of mini football strips (Under 8's and Under 10's) at a cost of around £400 - to help encourage potential World Cup winners of the future.

Caerwent CD - Bryan Morgan has very kindly produced a CD for us - "A hundred years of Caerwent through the Camera" which, as the name suggests, is compiled of several generations of photographs of people and places in both Caerwent and Llanfair - lots of old school photos. The CD is available at just £2.99 and would make an ideal gift. If you would like to buy one, please contact me.

We are still looking for good quality unwanted items for our car boot stalls - the next Car Boot Sale will be on Saturday 29 June and the following one on Saturday 27 July, if you have any items that you would like to donate (proceeds to the village hall) please contact me.

Our thoughts are now turning towards the Show on 7 September (note that date in your diary, it's too good a day to miss). Because of the increase we now have in helpers, this year we are looking at putting on more stalls of our own - such as abottle stall, tins, books, toys, cakes, plants and bric-a-brac. We will definitely be able to make use of the unwanted Christmas gifts that you haven't known what to do with - pass them on to us! If you are able to make donations towards any of these stalls, pleae contact Toni Prangley on 424262.

There are two things I must remind you of while I'm thinking of them:-
  • Firstly, we are still having problems with young people skateboarding on the hall roof - this is a serious matter, as the roof was renewed last year at a cost of £23, 000. If damage is caused and we are able to prove who caused it, then we would have no option but to prosecute.

  • Secondly, when hiring the hall, please take care to pick up and return the keys by the specified time. We have had a couple of occasions recently when the next person to hire the hall has not been able to gain access because the keys have not been returned on time.

Please note: Playing Fields Committee meetings will be held on the THIRD MONDAY OF EACH MONTH from now on, at 7:30pm in the hall

Yours sincerely,

Hilary
