I'm only too glad that I can start writing positive articles for the newsletter again. The meetings that we held in April were very successful with 52 people coming to the meeting on the 8th, to offer their support. We have a much more balanced committee, as you can see from the list, and hopefully with the increase in enthusiasm, we will be able to hold a wider variety of events at the hall, while finding the maintenance easier to manage. We are conscious that having increased the committee membership, everyone now needs jobs to be responsible for and we are in the process of setting up sub committees of 3-4 people for things such as finance, events & fund raising and the Show. This will spread the load for the original committee members and allow new ideas to come forward from everyone. We have only held one meeting so far but some of the points we are looking forward to are:
Saturday 1st June until Tuesday 4th June It didn't take long for us to get some plans together for the Golden Jubilee. We are concentrating our efforts on the Bank Holiday Monday and hope that we have thought of something for everyone. Times aren't finally agreed as yet, but we are expecting to put on a full day's events. The provisoinal programme is available by clicking here. Print it out and display it somewhere prominently - but watch out for updates! Of course, this is when the huge list of helpers will come in handy - if you have offered support please get together with us to arrange the day. We need people to help with the children's sports; plates of lovely food for the picnic tea; ideas and help with decorations for the hall (red, white and blue or gold) - if you know how to make bunting or arrange flowers, this could be your big moment! If you remember the day we had to celebrate VE Day - you will know what we are looking for - plenty of community spirit with everyone contributing to a very special day. Now on to other matters - Race Night went well on the 19th April, and around 48 people were there. Unfortunately the Caravan Club cancelled as this would have helped to swell the crowd. However, a good night was had by all. Just a point: Although we had 52 people offering help at a meeting a fortnight before, many of them were noticeable by their absence on the night. It's no good making offers without backing it up - please support our events. We have taken down the framework of the old scramble net and have accepted a quote from Monmouthshire County Council for the repair of the roundabout. We have asked them to start on this as soon as possible, Although we have disabled the roundabout, the youngsters still managed to get it going again. The next Car Boot Sale will be on Saturday 25 May at 11.30 am. We now have a regular Playing Fields stall at the car boot sales, and we are looking for books, toys and household goods - if you have any items that you would like to donate (proceeds to the village hall) please contact me. We are also looking forward to the Show on Saturday 7 September, you will find a copy of the schedule for the flower and vegetable sections of the Show in this newsletter. Some changes have been made and we hope it will encourage people in the community to enter their exhibits. We don't expect "Show" standards, but like to see what people grow in their gardens, and give the judges plenty of exhibits to choose from when deciding on the best in each section. We are still having a problem with young people skateboarding on the roof of the hall. Apart from the damage it causes to the roof, it is a very dangerous game to be playing. Please tell your children NOT to play on the roof of the hall - we will be reporting incidents to the police. The hall has recently become available for bookings on two evenings during the week - Tuesday and Thursday - it is also available during the day on most weekdays. If you know of any groups/clubs that would be interested please ask them to contact the Booking Clerk on 01291-425867. Tuesday 7th May at 7.30pm in the hall Yours sincerely, Hilary Hilary Counsell, Secretary Telephone 01291-421307 PS: The National Assembly for Wales is looking at bringing in nursery places for three year olds - our nearest nursery would probably be in Caldicot, if anyone is interested in setting up an approved playgroup/nursery in Caerwent or the surrounding area, please contact Liz Humphries, School Improvement Officer at County Hall (01633-644644) for further details. |
