Caerwent Playing Fields Association

NEWSLETTER

April 2002

Well, as you can see, there is another magazine this month. We felt it unproductive to just cancel everything until we knew the level of support that would come forward to help the Playing Fields back on its feet again.

As I said in the last magazine, we will be having a meeting on 8 April at 7.30pm in the Hall. This will be a test of people's commitment to the future of the Playing Fields Committee and the hall. We have had some offers of help during the month and we're hopeful that they were from people who could offer a genuine commitment.

However, the meeting on 8 April will be the acid test. Anyone and everyone who is interested in helping support the Playing Fields must come along and show their interest so that we can see if there is a definite future - this will be the first opportunity for testing your support.

We felt that in the short term, we should continue with the two events booked for April - the Race Night and the car boot sale - as this will give us another opportunity to test local support and give you the chance to show you care about the future of the hall and playing field.

Race Night - Friday 19 April in the Hall
Under starters orders 7:30pm, first race 8:00pm. There will be a slight change this year, in that all the races and horses will be named beforehand. Otherwise the evening remains the same.
There is no charge to watch the races, but you can sponsor a race for £15 and you will be named on the race card; you can also become a race horse owner for just £5 each.
You will be named on the race card as the owner and will then be able to cheer your horse home. You will be able to lay your bets (in multiples of £1) on the tote for cash prizes and there will be a bottle of champagne (well, bubbly anyway) for race winners.
There is the chance to win a major cash prize on both the auction race or the jackpot. This is a really good night and a lot of fun. We are looking forward to plenty of people taking part. I have asked long and loud for support for the Playing Fields and this is one way that you can show it.

Car Boot Sale - Saturday 20 April on the Playing Field, 11:30am.
The first car boot sale of the season is always a good one. Usually well attended by local people who want to sell their goods.
We charge £4 for cars and £6 for vans, so if you have anything you want to sell, you will be welcome to come along and take up a pitch.
We are also looking for someone (probably two people) to run a car boot stall for the Playing Fields as we have items for sale that have been donated to us. We will be looking for volunteers at the meeting on 8th April to run the stall for us, as other committee members will be tied up with controlling traffic, collecting money from stall holders and making teas.
We weren't able to run a stall last year because we didn't have enough help, but it is a good opportunity for making extra money for the hall. If support is forthcoming and the car boot sales continue beyond April, we will be asking local people to donate goods for our stall, and continue to man it on a regular basis until September. As far as the 200 Club is concerned, there was no draw again in March, but anyone that has paid for the year will either be refunded, or the year will extend to March 2003 (rather than January). We will know where we stand in April, hopefully.

Watch this space...

Yours sincerely,

Hilary
