Again a quiet month for the Playing Fields committee, we have been concentrating on the sports court for the playing field and, following the last meeting on 15 November it was agreed that we do not pursue this any further. This decision has been taken in part because we were not able to confirm regular daytime usage - due to the lack of a school in the village. The main reason, however, was because of a lack of commitment to sports development within the community. People were needed both to start up and run the Sports Association, and to develop individual achievements/teams in sports such as tennis, basketball and netball (we do already have support for football). These residents weren't forthcoming so it was unanimously agreed between ourselves and Monmouthshire County Council to discontinue our application. You will probably be aware that the Playing Fields Committee has been negotiating for this facility for the last couple of years, but at the end of the day, we have to prove local support for it and we couldn't do that. Personally, I feel that we gave it a good try, but it felt as though we were trying to provide something that people didn't really want. There we are - these things always come round again, it was only 25 years ago that we were trying the last time! Talking of 25 years ago - the extract from old newsletters have now ended. I took the extracts to celebrate 25 years of the newsletter being published, and I've now run out of old editions! Many thanks to Terry Jones for the copies. Now on to other things: The central heating boiler in the hall has been playing up since the colder weather, so that has been repaired and the radiators have all been bled to ensure that they are hot - our thanks to Brian Counsell for sorting this problem out. As I mentioned last month, the hall has been hired out for a private party on New Years Eve this year, and from what I have heard, the tickets are sold out already - well done Charlie, hope you have a great night! The '200 Club' draw for November. We will be having a "super draw" in December and increasing the prizes from three to six, so look out for your name, you may be a lucky winner. The annual payments for the 200 Club will be due in February (just giving you some advance warning!), and we will be sending reminder letters out next month. Can I just say that there are some numbers still available so if you would like to join, please let me know and I'll get an application form to you. It only costs £1 a month, paid by direct debit through your bank. What easier way could there be to support your local village hall and playing fields? On behalf of the Playing Fields Committee I would like to wish all our readers a very happy Christmas and jov and peace in the New Year. Yours sincerely, 'til next time, Hilary Hilary Counsell, Secretary Telephone 01291-421307 |
