The Roman weekend went well. The weather was beautiful on the Saturday afternoon when the Roman soldier, doctor, cooks, armourer and story tellers were on the Roman walls. They all had interesting tales to tell and we estimate that about 200 people took part throughout he afternoon. On the Sunday around 24 people went on the morning walk to Llanmellin Hill Fort and about a dozen on the afternoon walk to the standing stones on Gray Hill. Unfortunately they had a wet walk, with drizzle falling on the hill. The rest of us that looked at the excavations in the village with Dr Richard Brewer and Evan Chapman had a dry but overcast afternoon. Richard and Evan showed about 50 people around, in two groups, they are very knowledgeable about the excavations and the history of Caerwent in Roman times. Altogether we felt it was a successful weekend. Most of the work over the last month has been in getting the Sports Association off the ground. We held a meeting on the 8th of October in the hall and although we did receive offers of support, unfortunately none of them were from people with an interest in developing sports within the community. We will be holding a further meeting on 15 November at 7.30 in the hall. It is very important that anyone with a sporting interest attends this meeting as it will be our last attempt to generate some enthusiasm for the multi-use sports court. If you are interested in developing sports, or becoming a coach then please come along to this meeting to register your interest, (we are particularly looking for football, tennis and either basketball or netball) if we don't get the support then I think we must realise that we are trying to provide a facility for people that don't really want it. We hope that's not the case and that people with a genuine interest will come forward and we will be able to move on with the application to SPORTLOT. On to other things: We have decided not to hold a New Years Eve Dance this year. This means the hall is available for hire at £120 for the night. If you are interested in booking it, please contact the Booking Clerk on 01291-425867 as I know at least one group are interested in it already. We are presently spending some of the money we made on Show day. We have ordered two new wooden tables and benches for the patio. These will be bolted down to the concrete so that they cannot be moved. Hopefully it will also stop them being taken apart and used as skateboard ramps. We have also ordered 6 folding tables for the hall to replace some of the solid tables. Eventually we will replace all the tables we have with folding tables, as they are easier and lighter to set up and take down. The tables cost in the region of £90 each, so you can see that the money doesn't go far. We are also in the process of costing a PA system - although I think we are talking megabucks here! The army base will be open for organised tours during the weekend after Christmas, the 28th & 29th of December. We will let you know the details in the December newsletter.
