Caerwent Playing Fields Association

NEWSLETTER

October 2001

We have been quiet in the month since the Show. Busy organising the revival of interest in the multi-use tennis court and the Sports Association. A more detailed article follows, but if we are to get this facility in Caerwent then it is imperative that all the local people interested in helping out with setting up the Sports Association or coaching/training sporting activities attend the meeting arranged for Monday 8 October at 7pm in the hall.
Officers from Monmouthshire County Council will also be there and will assist us in making an application if we can be seen to have the necessary support. We have been talking about this multi-use court for a long time, but now is the moment that we have to show real commitment to it.

Saturday/Sunday 13/14 October - Roman Weekend
The Roman legionnaires that came to the festival Show last year were so popular that we're having them back. Keep this weekend free as the Romans and Silurian Celts will be about on the Saturday from lpm in the orchard at the back of the Coach & Horses Inn garden and along the Roman walls - see the soldiers, the armourer at his forge making weapons, the Roman kitchen, the doctor, a storyteller and Roman games for the children.
(If the weather is wet, the venue will be the village hall and playing field).

On Sunday there will be walks in the countryside (courtesy of the Caerwent Historic Trust):
Llanmellin Hill Fort (2 miles) - meet at 10.45am at the Coach & Horses car park, set off in cars and park in Llanfair Discoed.
Standing stones on Gray Hill (2 miles) - meet at 3pm at the Reservoir car park (I mile beyond Llanfair Discoed).
Tour/talk on the archaelogical excavations (1½ hours) - Caerwent village, meet at the cenotaph at 2.30pm (courtesy of Dr Richard Brewer, University of Wales, Cardiff).

Yours sincerely, 'til next time,

Hilary
