Caerwent Playing Fields Association

NEWSLETTER

July & August 2001

At the moment we are working behind the scenes, trying to get the inevitable grant aid that we need to make improvements. At present we have an application in to Messrs Dulux for paint; one in to the Welsh Church Fund for replacement folding tables; another one for security lighting for the hall and the final one for a Community Chest Award, applying for a replacement tennis net and new sleeves. Hopefully at least one of the nets will be put up on the field during the next week (while Wimbledon is foremost in people's minds). We've lost the sleeves for the second net somewhere in the field, we tried to find them with metal detectors last year and failed to do so. Anyway, that net is pretty tatty now, we've had it for years, so have applied for a replacement for it.

Generally, the way these grants work is that if we are successful (which is never a foregone conclusion) we have to provide a percentage of the costs. It is quite time consuming in filling in the forms etc., but well worth it, as we could not afford to wholly fund the items ourselves. When you consider that the refurbishment of the scramble net alone cost £1,720, you can see that progress would be slow without the grant aid.

Tilly Swain has retired as our hall cleaner this month. We are sorry to lose her as she has done Sterling work in the hall for more years than I care to remember. We would like to thank her and express our gratitude for her continued support and her untiring efforts in the thankless task of keeping the hall clean. Welcome aboard Michelle Williams, who has taken over Tilly's role and is now 'Keeper of the Buffer'.

Don't forget the next car boot sale will be held on July 21st from 11.30am. Come along to sell your unwanted gear or to pick up a bargain. There won't be one in August as the Show will be on the 1st September and the sale has been moved to that date to coincide.

Something that I have been asked to mention in the newsletter is litter on the field. Would everyone please be aware that the Council do not empty bins on the field (only the wheelie bin at the front of the hall) and other litter has to be disposed of by volunteers (I was surprised and delighted to get a volunteer this week - that doesn't happen very often!).

Please don't leave litter on the field at any time, but particularly not after having camped overnight. I don't know how many young people read this newsletter, but if you are a parent who knows their children camp on the field - please pass this message on to them.

PLEASE NOTE: As usual there will be no Newsletter in August.

Yours sincerely,
