Caerwent Playing Fields Association

NEWSLETTER

January 2001

I'll start by wishing a very happy and peaceful new year to all our readers.

This is the first issue of Volume 25 of the Community Newsletter. There I was, thinking this was the 25th year, until Brian told me it was the 26th really. Never mind. I'm ignoring that and pretending it's 25!
This pretence is going to go on all the year too. Originally I thought I would just print a couple of pages out of some of the old newsletters - but they have proved to be such interesting reading that I will include excerpts each month for the corresponding months of 1975 and 1976.
We have Terry Jones of St. Tathan's Place to thank for keeping some of the old copies - I'm glad he has made them available to us.

So to the Playing Fields business for December. The first part of the application to SPORTLOT for the multi-use court was finally handed in at the end of November. We have to wait until February to find out whether it has been accepted, and then put in the second part of the application - but at least it's on it's way.

We haven't got any further at the moment with the renewal of the village hall roof. The job has gone out to tender and we are awaiting the results. We have a grant from Monmouthshire County Council for £13,000 towards the costs of the roof, and we will have to make up the balance ourselves. We are not certain of the amount yet, but it could be around £5,000.

There are still numbers available in the "200 Club". If you would like to be included in the list of people eligible for the monthly prize draw, call me on 01291-421307 and I'll make arrangements for membership and collection of the £12.00 per year membership fee.

And last but not least...   The New Years Eve Millennium Pirate Party! It was a great success. Very many thanks to Terry Victor, Liz Gardiner and their merry men for making it a night to remember for the 90+ pirates, rapscallions, wenches, etc.
Terry entertained us and had us laughing all night - we did party tricks, walked the plank and "found" Cap'n Bubbly's Booty on the treasure map. It was a memorable night and a fitting end to the old year.

When we turned up on New Year's Day to clean up it looked as if someone had thrown a hand grenade into the hall - it was a memorable mess too! (But it cleaned up in a couple of hours.)

Mrs Edith Thomas...

A big THANK YOU from Edie to all of you who sent cards and came to see her on her 90th birthday. It was such a happy day - her best memory of the year 2000.
And whilst she's on the line, HAPPY NEW YEAR, and she hopes she'll see you again in 2001!
