Magazine Moments!

The April 1977 issue reports that 40 people had attended the AGM of the Playing Fields Association. The lucky Chairman was Tommy Gardner, Stuart's uncle.

An election was needed to appoint the committee because nominees far exceeded the number of places to be filled! (Let's hope we get at least enough volunteers on Monday 8th April 2002!)

Two items from the Community Council's section have a familiar ring: "Electric Power Failures" and "Flooding at St Brides"
It's fair to say that some progress has been made with the reliability of electricity but the flooding is, if anything, worse.

Spring 1977 was a busy time for meetings in preparation for the Queen's Silver Jubilee: it seems there were committees and supporting activities in Llanfair and Caerwent (separately but co-ordinated).

At that time of course there was a school in both villages, which must have helped to focus activity. This brings us to a local jubilee which has just been celebrated. Eddie Jones was appointed Pastor of the Baptist Chapel in January 1977 and the April issue carried this interesting tribute from the Secretary, Eric Lovell:
"It might come as a surprise to some, and be astonishing to others, that in the age of Concord and motor cycles which achieve 100 miles per hour, that our pastor should see fit to walk from Caerwent to Bulwark on several occasions. A touch of the old Puritans, you may say, who travelled far and wide on horseback (no offers please!) or on foot preaching the good news (gospel) of Jesus and his love for mankind. I suspect there is something far deeper than the touch of the Stoic or some kind of exhibitionist as he trudges towards Caerwent from Bulwark. Underneath it all lies the intense desire to serve God in Caerwent. Here is a young man who gave up a promising career in Fine Art to follow that to which the Lord has called him."
