CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL Last year, after many requests in this Newsletter, the incidence of dog fouling, especially on the Roman wall in Caerwent went down considerably. Thank you to everyone who responded to the requests to treat the matter responsibly. Unfortunately some seem to have forgotten and the situation is much worse again. It is not just on the Roman Wall. Someone in Llanfair Discoed is collecting the faeces in plastic bags but hanging them on trees and bushes. Clearly all of these activities must stop and we ask residents to make every effort to take care of the environment and have a thought for others in this matter. Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation. Some of you might be aware that there is to be a re-organization of the Police Force which may well have local impact. We are soon to have a briefing on these measures and, after assessing the new arrangements, we will report back to you. Regretfully, dead buzzards are still being found. If anyone has any information at all, regarding these incidents can they please let us, or the local Police know. If anyone wishes to remain anonymous, that wish will be respected. We are getting many complaints about off road vehicles both in the playing fields and on other sites in the area. This matter is being brought before the Regional Community Safety Action Team which consists of senior Police officers, youth workers and local councillors etc who take joint action in dealing with matters reported to them. Would anyone who knows who is involved in these activities please let us know. There are better and authorized sites throughout the county. There is a body of concern over the caravan at Caerwent church. This will be removed as soon as possible. However, it has been used to house the Sunday school which is very well attended. Alternative accommodation is being researched at present. Residents of Caerwent will have received a newssheet from the Developer of Merton Green. There has been much about this development in previous months but suffice to say at this stage, even though the developer’s proposals are stated in their communication, they have NOT been agreed by MCC. It will be for the Planning Committee to decide, at a subsequent Inspection at appeal, not the Developer. A few months ago, we suggested it might be helpful if we could find a volunteer to help with work that would be desirable to carry out on Gray Hill. This Council is very aware of the ownership of Gray Hill. Our request was to find out if there would be any help available if work was subsequently authorized by the owners or their representatives and to establish what may be possible given the amount of help available. We are sorry if any interested party thought we were trying to do anything other than stated above. In any event there were no volunteers. We now have a full report on the “Time Team” activities carried out last June. If anyone wishes to see it, please contact us and we will lend it to you. We only have the one copy so please be patient. Phil Murphy Chairman
