Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

October 2008

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Regrettably this month we accepted the resignation of Jackie Williams who represented Caerwent.  Jackie had served on this Council for 17 years and we will miss her very much.  MCC will advertise the vacancy and, should anyone wish to stand for election provided that person is sponsored by 10 of the electorate, they will be appointed.  Should more that one person choose to stand then there will inevitably have to be an election.  If no one stands then we will look for someone to co-opt.

Further concerns were brought to our attention regarding the lack of grass cutting in the Merton Green area.  This had already been taken up with MCC who, regretfully were unable to cut it due to the change of ownership.  Members of the public asked that this Council get behind them in their efforts to change the proposals for the development.  We agreed that, should the points that we are asked to debate be made clear we would indeed consider our position and if thought fit makes further representations to the Planners and Developers.

Concern has been raised by several residents about businesses being carried out in the area at residential locations without, it appears, the relevant permission to do so. This Council has been made aware that Planning Enforcement have become aware recently of such recurrences and clearly the advise must be that anyone who finds themselves in this position should clarify with MCC the position as it relates to them.

On a lighter note - the local junior football club recently asked us for assistance with their strip.  This we were pleased to be able to do.

The anticipated training has now been given to our local Police regarding the use of a speed gun.  Mention of this has been made previously in this item but it is now a reality.  Penalty tickets will be issued after two warnings so take heed.

Coming back to Merton Green, MCC has asked us to suggest street names for the development.  Clearly, we feel Ash Tree Road should remain the main thoroughfare but other suggestions are Kilpale after the village lost along with Dinham, and the names of the farms that were lost when the MOD created the base.

Dog fouling is again an issue within the walks in the walled area.  Please be responsible when walking dogs in these areas.

The road works are progressing well in the Highmoor Hill area.  We hope that residents are not too inconvenienced by these long-term works.  We consider that they are so long overdue that, within reason these should be put up with but please let us know if you have any real problems.

We are still trying to get the MOD in Westminster to get the Westgate entrance to the base open.  The residents of Dinham Road are being greatly affected by the continual use of this road.  We hope you will bear with us on that.
