CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL The decision has been made and Merton Green has been given detailed planning permission by the full Planning Committee of MCC. We are only too aware of the objections of some residents to the scheme but now that it is at this stage, although we understand that there may be legal challenges, we must look to the benefits that can be derived from the development. In addition to conditions imposed on the Developer in respect of upgrading sewage provision in Caerwent and the closure of School Lane to help with traffic problems, amongst others, there is the matter of the Section 106 monies, which have been mentioned, in previous Newsletters. We would like your help in identifying projects, which we may be able to put forward for consideration in securing leisure and educational schemes in the area. These need to be within a 5-mile radius of the site. Some potential projects are: 1. The purchase of the Old Gym in Lawrence Crescent to preserve it as a facility in the area. 2. Renovation of the Church organ in Caerwent. 3. New kitchen and or changing facilities at the Village Hall. 4. New play equipment. 5. The creation of walks and bridle ways. 6. Toilet facilities at the Churches. The list goes on, but what do you think? There will be in the region of £360,000 at our disposal so please let us have your ideas. Llanfair Discoed Church fundraising committee came to address the Council this month with a view to asking for assistance with their activities, which we were pleased to do. The Police have appointed a new and additional PCSO who has responsibility for the Wentwood Forest area. He is equipped with a suitable vehicle to carry out his duties so please, if you have any problem or know of problems in that area, do not hesitate to contact them. Unfortunately, there have been reports of horse thieves operating in the area recently and also of someone shooting in and around the vicinity of Dewstow – indeed a cat has recently been found shot dead. If anyone has information on this please inform the Police. At last we have movement on the footpaths etc in Llanfair Discoed. A site meeting is to be held shortly to fix a programme. When we know more we will report it here. We had a site meeting in Canon Lane recently with MCC’s Lighting Officer, to consider action to counteract the problems associated with “back lighting” from the new lighting units. The Engineers will initially tilt the units by 5 degrees to see if that solves the problem. Lets hope it does or other more substantial remedies will have to be found. We hope that you have all received your published “Community Local Resident Report” which has been delivered to all Residents. We intend to hold a Public Meeting to discuss its findings, and to give its conclusions on Monday 14 July at 8.00 pm in Caerwent Village Hall. We look forward to seeing you there.Phil Murphy Chairman
