CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

In April we received a large group of concerned residents in relation to the Merton Green development in Caerwent.  Their collective views were that the number of houses planned was excessive and associated traffic and sewage problems would be compounded by the development.

It was reported that MCC’s Planning Committee had met to hear the concerns that had been expressed at the previous public meeting and had deferred a decision pending more improvements to the design and infrastructure.  A site meeting by the Planning Committee has since been held along with a further planning meeting at which permission was once again deferred as Members were still not happy with the scheme. 

As regards the traffic schemes to be considered and their impact on the whole area, a public meeting concerning that will be convened as soon as practical.

It is to be hoped that by the time this Newsletter is published, the MoD will be able to use the Westgate entrance to the Base.  The bridge was repaired a while ago but further complications resulted in delays.  The re-opening of the gate should hopefully see an end to problems in Dinham Road.

It is not long before the Summer will be here and children’s play schemes will come into their own.  This Council has given financial support to schemes in the area.

The Summer will also see Channel 4’s “Time Team” in the area.  Many of you will no doubt have seen the programme on Portskewett a few weeks ago.  We do not know when the Caerwent programme will be broadcast but it is most likely to be some time next year.

May 1^st will see the appointment or re-appointment of Community Councillors.  No election took place, as there were only enough candidates to fill the existing places.
