CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL We start this month by thanking all of those who came along to the exhibition given by Barratts regarding the Merton Green development. It was a tremendous turnout and many very valid and constructive observations were made which the Developers have already taken into account. However, whilst this was a very useful introduction to the project it does not go far enough and we believe a Public meeting is still required and we will do all that we can to ensure that it takes place soon. At that meeting we hope to have someone who can talk with authority with regard to planning, highways and the environment, especially regarding sewage disposal. There are a lot of concerns regarding sewage in the area in any event and this development can only make the problem worse unless adequate steps are taken to deal with the matter. Unfortunately, the turnout was less than encouraging at the PACT meeting recently. The Police were asked to arrange an evening meeting to encourage better attendance because it is acknowledged that residents cannot always get to these meetings during the day. Only two residents attended. On Police matters the new speed gun is now available and is being used in the area. Further use in the near future will be made of it so slow down and it won’t be a problem. The Police report that the new traffic island on the A48 at Crick seems to be slowing traffic down as it was designed to do. However, the site is being monitored for its effectiveness. We received a presentation from MCC Officers on the proposals for the new Primary School at Rogiet. Parents had had the opportunity to attend a similar one at the School but some had been unable to go. This presentation at Caerwent gave the Council and the Public who attended an insight into the proposals and we had the opportunity to make observations, which can be taken into account when the final design is presented. The School should open in September 2009. We are assured that the inevitable increase in local children going to the School due to the Merton Green development has been taken into account. We are aware of concerns regarding the robustness of the new street lighting in Caerwent. Further enquiries are currently being made of the MCC Lighting Officer and we will keep the pressure on to resolve the matter. Phil Murphy Chairman
