Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

January 2008

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Be on the lookout when driving around the area.  The Police have a speed gun available to them and expect to have it in service quite soon.  Now those who keep to the speed limit will have nothing to fear regarding this, but how many of us have strayed over the limit without realising it?

Matters are progressing regarding Merton Green.  The Public Meeting with the Developer has been arranged for Saturday 2nd February 9.00 a.m. – 1.30 p.m. in the Old Gym, Lawrence Crescent.  Please make every effort to attend, as this will be the only opportunity for Public viewing.

The MoD has offered a further year’s lease on the Old Gym and so that part of our concern is less of a threat than it might have been.  It still remains our objective to use Section 106 money generated from the Merton Green development to secure the Old Gym building not only for the Youth Club but also for wider Community use.

Another possible use of the Section 106 monies is the development of a recognised walk around the military fence incorporating Llanmelin Hill Fort and other sites of interest along the route.  This could also link into the footpath from Caldicot, which is nearing completion.

Fly tipping is becoming more of a problem again.  Enforcement action will be taken against fly tippers and there will be surveillance to endeavour to catch offenders.  This is a blight on the area, and it would be appreciated if any instances could be reported to M.C.C. or the Police especially if the offender can be recognised.

As the work on the A48 and its footpaths/cycleways nears completion there have been queries regarding the Castroggy and Trewen junctions. We are assured that these works have not been forgotten and are held up awaiting supplies.  Perhaps, by the time this Newsletter is published the work will have been carried out.  Lets hope so.

Due to the budget restraints at M.C.C. the grass cutting in the area will be more under the control of the Community Council.  Accordingly we will be seeking tenders for the work envisaged, as this is a requirement of the process.  Anyone who would like details of what is to be tendered for can obtain this information from the Clerk to the Community Council whose details are set out below.

There has been some concern over the affect of the new traffic island at Crick.  The idea is to make it safer for people who live on the section of the A48 where it is located to enter their properties and, at the same time, slow traffic down which has been the call from residents of the village for some time.  We would ask for a little patience with it to see how successful it is.  However, should there be any observations at any time please let us know.
