CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL Regretfully we start this months offering with a warning. There has been a spate of distraction burglaries of late. Please be vigilant, especially those of you who may live alone. If in doubt do not let anyone in. If you are concerned then call the Police. If the person is genuine they will not mind, and you will at least know that it is safe for them to enter your house. At last the Merton Green site is finally sold after a few last minute delays. Barretts latest set of proposals for the development of the site are much better than the previous set but are not yet acceptable to Highways. As promised, as soon as we get a set of plans worth consulting on we will arrange the public meeting. On the subject of that area there have been some queries over land ownership of small parcels of land and the rights of access over others. Please refer any queries that you have to us so we can follow them up. The MoD is in the process of surveying the Old Gym in Lawrence Crescent, Caerwent, with a view to arriving at a valuation. At that point we can look at the viability of the application of monies raised on the Merton Green development to secure it for the community. There have been a lot of road works and various assorted schemes of late and we are sorry if you have been inconvenienced by any of these. However, each of them should be of benefit to the community. The Heritage Visitors Centre project at the Caerwent School has run into further problems. It is a fact of life these days that local authorities are short of money. However, we had hoped that as Newport City Council’s museum service is holding a considerable volume of Roman artefacts etc that they would be minded to consider helping to provide a suitable place to show them. These are not on public view for the most part. Unfortunately, they have replied to us stating that they have no resources to support the project but that there may be a chance of collaboration on specific projects with the museum service. We shall see. We end with a plea. Would whoever is leaving little bags of dog mess in hedges and on trees in Llanfair Discoed please take them home and dispose of them properly. This practise stopped for a while but complaints from residents are coming in again. A reminder that our Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday 11th November at 10.45 a.m. at the Cenotaph in Caerwent. All are welcome.
