Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

Sept 2007

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The main message this month is “Lock It or Lose It”.  We are experiencing a spate of thefts from vehicles, which are being made easier by people leaving their cars unlocked.  You have been warned.

There remains a concern over Merton Green and the development soon to take place there.  We are still going to have the promised Public Meeting when the proposals from Barratts are closer to what may happen (at present they are unacceptable for various Planning reasons).  There is also confusion over the area to be developed.  Merton Green is not just the parcel of land behind Llanfair Road.  It extends to Dinham Road.  This area was identified for development in 1991.  There is clearly also a problem over the suggestion of parking outside some of the flats that needs to be addressed, as is access for utility vehicles and emergency vehicles.

On the subject of housing you may also be aware that the proposed transfer of the Council’s housing stock to the Housing Association has moved a step closer.

The situation regarding the Old Gym in Caerwent is dragging on.  The MoD’s Surveyor is soon to submit his report on the building at which time it may be clearer what it is likely to cost to secure it for the community.  We can then look to funding via the Merton Green development.

Good news for the residents of Dinham Road.  The MoD now has funding for the repair at the West Gate and the access problem should be resolved by Christmas.

Residents of Crick have expressed concern over the use of the Crick to Portskewett Road by inappropriate vehicles.  MCC are looking at a traffic survey to try to decide on the most appropriate method of addressing residents concerns.

There will also be a resolution of the central reservation problem by the railway bridge at Crick soon.  It is hoped that there will also be improvements at the Shirenewton Road junction, and to the A48/Castroggy Road junction. About time we hear you cry!

It may also be possible soon to improve the surface of the footpaths in Llanfair Discoed.  More as we get it.
