Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

Aug 2007

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

We hope you have all survived the vagaries of the wonderful Summer that we thought we were going to get.  The conditions were wonderful for plant growth especially hedges.  If you have a hedge next to a road or pavement could you please ensure that it is cut back.  We are getting complaints about this from all over the area.

Merton Green watchers will possibly have heard by now that the Planning application has been received.  MCC planners are unhappy with certain aspects of it as are we.  The joint observations are being referred back to Barretts and when a corrected set is available that is broadly acceptable we intend to have a Public Meeting on the matter.  It is hoped that we will have a senior Planning Officer and possibly someone from the Developers at that meeting.  Please watch the notice boards for a time and date.

Progress is being made regarding putting together the results of the Community Questionnaire.  There was a great deal of analysis to do and many comments to sift through.  Hopefully we will get the results out before Christmas and again we intend to hold a Public Meeting to present the report and discuss its findings.

The Police are warning of high pressure sales people in the area targeting the elderly.  Also, of bogus Charity collections of clothing etc.  Please be alert to these people.

There is also a concern regarding heavy lorries on the St Brides Road.  If you see any vehicle that you consider is inappropriately using any of the lanes etc then please take their index number and report the matter to the Police on 01633 838111.

Dinham Road, the Westgate entrance to the Base and most matters of a Military nature have cropped up recently.  We have complained to the Mod and also to MCC who have also made representations to them.  It is essential that the Westgate entrance is put back into use at the earliest opportunity and we will continue to press this point.

There is disappointing news regarding the Heritage Visitors Centre project in that the Heritage Lottery Fund has indicated that they were unlikely to offer further funding for the project.  Part of the reason for this seems to be the Westgate Barns which now provide some of the facilities that would have been available at the School site.  We have asked Cadw to meet with us in the Autumn after which we will call a meeting with all interested parties to try to decide if there is a way forward.
