CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL Look out, there’s a road digger about! On 6th August, Western Power are going to carry out substantial works in Caerwent between West Gate and the Coach & Horses. The work will involve removing the overhead power cables and laying new ones underground. It is hoped that the work should be completed in four to five weeks but, as its Caerwent and digging is involved we can only hope that the attendant Archaeologist doesn’t halt the work if something is found. There will be traffic control along this portion of highway and Western Power would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused for the duration of the works. There will also be the opportunity to put in additional street lighting and we have suggested where that should be. We have also requested a design of lamp that complements the village. We have had a presentation regarding the plans for Severn Tunnel Junction. The action group “STAG” were very successful in getting services restarted at the station last year and now have turned their attention to improving facilities, bus links, taxi ranks, proper waiting rooms etc. We wish them well and have pledged to do all that we can to assist. Have you seen a crime in progress or someone causing a nuisance. If you have a mobile phone take a photograph. Such photos taken by the Public are admissible evidence if you let the Police have them. You will not be surprised to hear that there has been an eleventh hour delay with the Merton Green sale. It had been hoped to confirm in this Newsletter that “Barratts” had bought it. However, that should be possible in next month’s edition. We are still keeping up the pressure on the Mod to get the Westgate entrance repaired. This will relieve the traffic in Dinham Road again, so let’s hope it’s done soon. Progress is being made with the possible creation of a circular walk around the Military fence, with links to Caldicot and the Hill Fort together with picnic facilities etc. We will keep you updated in due course. There is also progress regarding the link in Public Footpaths via the track from Great House Farm. Again, we will let you know when negotiations are complete. Plans for the alteration to the central reservation in Crick to get rid of the cones and red and white posts are in the consultation process. It is hoped that work, which was promised earlier in the year will get under way at last. The cones were looking like a permanent feature - hopefully, not for much longer. At long last we have some road adoptions. Walnut Grove in Crick has been adopted, Centurian Court in Caerwent is about to be adopted and Cwrt Morgan is lagging behind pending adoption of the drainage by Welsh Water. We will keep up the campaign to get this completed as soon as possible. Those of you who sent back Community Questionnaires, may be wondering when the results will be known. The collation has now been done and additional information is being compiled. We should get the results out early in the Autumn.
