Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

May 2007

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

As another Council year begins a few more road repair or improvement schemes get started and, at last the design brief for the work at Crick is out for consultation.  There are concerns over how some residents will get to Chepstow but we are sure those problems can be ironed out.  After such a long time the cones etc have become a bit of a feature that we can live without.

You will have noticed that the speed camera at Eastgate has been replaced.  Let’s hope it lasts longer than the previous ones.  As mentioned in earlier references to it, it has the best safety record of any in the country in that there have been no accidents at that spot since it has been a camera location.  There is a problem however.  It is too near to the closest property and there is considerable concern about that.  Representations to the Safety Camera Partnership through the Police and M.C.C. Highways were made to try to convince them that its original siting nearer the highway was more appropriate.  Unfortunately, at present at least, to no avail.  It should be noted that as the A48 is a trunk road it is not under the control of M.C.C.

Following visits by the Police the problem at the toilet area in Caerwent seems to have ceased.  Let’s hope this is a lasting solution.

The problem with inappropriate parking on the Caerwent to Caldicot Road, ie across garages and in front of driveways, has been the subject of Police action of late.  If you are, especially at school bus times, parking on that road please be respectful to local residents and watch out for vehicles travelling past.

The latest meeting with the MoD progressed the situation regarding the Old Gym.  Discussions with M.C.C. and the MoD are promising and we anticipate more positive news.

We are looking, with M.C.C. and the MoD, at the possibility of a right of way in the form of a circular walk around the MoD fence incorporating the Hill Fort at Llanmelin.  That would add a valuable route to those who are interested in walking and now that we have agreement in principle to its creation this will be pursued.

The Llanmelin Hill Fort is to be made more accessible.  Cadw are to provide signs, access and a car park.  We will keep you informed of developments.

The problems at Dinham Road as a consequence of the west gate entrance to the MoD base being restricted due to an internal bridge collapse are not yet resolved.  We are advised that there is a funding issue and a temporary repair is against MoD regulations.  Further representations are being made.

On a final note, it has been reported that someone is quite properly collecting up after their dog in Llanfair Discoed but then hanging the bag on hedges, fences etc.  Whoever is doing that is requested to dispose of the bags at home.
