Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

Jan 2007

CAERWENT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

May we take this opportunity to welcome back to this Council Steve Parrish who will become a Councillor again for Llanfair Discoed.  Our thanks go to the other people who expressed an interest in the position.

This month we start with traffic concerns, a frequent topic but an important one.

Concern has been expressed by residents about the speed of traffic on the Caerwent to Caldicot Road and its effect, combined with parking problems due to the extra vehicles at school time, on the safety of children when the bus is due.  Please take extra care morning and afternoon.  We would hate to see an accident there.

We were visited by residents of Highfield, concerned at proposals to extend the car parking provision at Caerwent Village Hall.  The Committee are proposing to extend this car park to try to solve problems experienced near the bungalows at the entrance to the site.  It has been agreed to enter into further consultation on the matter with concerned residents and hopefully by the time you read this report a way forward will have been reached.

If anyone knows who damaged the speed camera on the A48 it would be hoped that they would inform the Police.  That site is the most successful in the Country.  Since the camera has been in place there has been no accident of any significance.  Already since the camera was removed we have had one incident.  Let us hope that noone gets killed.  Surely the safety of a junction is more important than exceeding the speed limit.

There has been a lot of concern over Merton Green and the belief that a Planning Application had been submitted.  That was not the case.  The exercise being carried out was to regularise ownership of the site prior to sale to the developer whoever that turns out to be.  As soon as an application is registered we will call a Public Meeting to ensure that we collect everyone’s views on this major development in the area.

We have been concerned for sometime about the condition of some of the stone walls in Caerwent, especially those owned by M.C.C.  The County Farms Manager has agreed to inspect these and report back to us.

Many of you may be interested in the Lower Wye Area Forum.  This is an opportunity to meet with various groups and individuals to discuss matters of local importance and to get updates on issues affecting the Community as a whole.  If you would like to get involved watch the local press for meeting dates.
