Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

Nov 2006

Caerwent Community Council

We start this month with a plea.  Will people please reduce their speed in the lanes?  A very concerned resident came to see us at the last meeting about this problem, and in doing so alerted the Police to the matter.  It hopefully goes without saying that excessive speeds in the lanes can only lead to a nasty accident one day, so please slow down and drive to the conditions.

Look out for increased activity at the MoD base.  In January/February 2007 there will be a pre-Afghanistan session involving helicopters etc.  We hope that the residents will bear with the situation during this most important training.

On the subject of the MoD, the Old Gym situation has not progressed greatly and we are awaiting our meeting with the interested parties to review the overall sport and leisure provision in the area.  This should take place quite soon and we will report back then.

A meeting has taken place regarding Rogiet School and the retention of that school for the children of Caerwent in particular.  We were assured that the new school which is due to be opened in September 2009 would be able to cater for the children that are envisaged to require those places at that time.

Merton Green still goes on although there has been a hold up recently regarding open spaces.  When that is resolved and more details of the actual proposals that the developer is putting forward are known we will report back.

Have you tried the Grass Routes Bus yet?  It is now up and running in the area in addition to the Severnside Bus.  It is a good supplement to the Francis Drake and Stage Coach services and don’t forget once you have joined it is free to pass holders.

We appear to have a problem of expanding hedges.  Could these be cut back please as there are problems with Highways and Footpaths.

Those who attended the opening of Cadw’s barns would have had a very interesting insight into Roman Caerwent.  If you haven’t been it’s well worth the effort.  As regards the other Heritage Centre in the old School, a meeting is due with the Heritage Lottery Fund soon when it is hoped that the project can be progressed.  By the way it is not proposed to close School Lane.

The Community Questionnaire is progressing.  Hopefully we will get it out after Christmas.

As this is the last Newsletter before Christmas may we wish you a happy one and a Prosperous and Happy New Year.
