Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

Oct 2006

Caerwent Community Council

Do you live in the Llanfair Discoed area? If so you might be interested in becoming a member of this Council. A vacancy has occurred and is being advertised. We hope that we can welcome a new member as soon as possible.

Residents of the Dinham area have been having difficulty with mini motorbikes. The Police are determined to ensure appropriate use of these bikes before there is a nasty accident. Would residents whose children have them be sure to control their use please.

It was sad to hear of the vandalism in Caerwent Church yard a few weeks ago. Lets hope that there is no repeat of this.

The above two points are just some of the issues that raise questions that could be incorporated in the Community Questionnaire which is being compiled and will be delivered in the near future. As mentioned in previous newsletters, this exercise is being carried out to try to gauge the views of the local Community about as many aspects of life in the area as possible. The information will be used by ourselves and MCC and possibly The Welsh Assembly in the provision of facilities, services etc, and so is an important test of opinion. When it arrives please take the time to complete it and ensure that it is available for collection. It is intended to present the results at a Public meeting in due course.

We are aware that some Parents are concerned about the review of Education in this part of the county and the possible provision for our children at a school other than Rogiet.  We must stress that no decision has been made yet and as part of the consultation process a meeting has been set up with the Cabinet member and Officers to ensure that our views are forcefully expressed. We will obviously keep you informed of developments.

Merton Green is also a factor in the Schools provision as 150 or so homes will be built there. It also has a bearing on the A48 as the Caerwent population will be further separated in that there will be more people living that side of the road. MCC are consulting on a 30mph zone with one or, as we have requested, two controlled crossings.

The Old Gym and its retention or re-provision is still under review and a meeting has been arranged with representatives of each of the local facilities to try to ensure appropriate provision in the area. More as we get it.

Residents of Highfield will be pleased to note that a grant has been received towards extending the car park at the Village Hall. This should relieve the on street parking problem.

Llanfair Discoed will soon receive a new piece of play equipment. It has been provided by the Llanfair Village Hall Fund and represents the last of the monies held by that fund. The Trustees have applied to the Charities Commission for it to be wound up. Our thanks to the Trustees for their stewardship of the fund over the years.
