Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

June 2006

Caerwent Community Council

This month we received with some anxiety a correspondence from the MoD that their Headquarters in London had authorized the selling off of the Old Gym in Lawrence Crescent, where the Youth Club and many other organizations meet.  We must save this building for the benefit of all its users and to that end representations, further to those already made, are being made to David Davies AM MP and various Officers of Monmouthshire County Council.  As far as MCC is concerned the building has an amenity use and will not be re-designated as housing so, round one to us!  However, it will be a long and difficult battle unless the political pressure at Westminster has the desired effect.  We hope so.

We have been considering the possible consequences of the proposal to remove full time Firefighters from Caldicot Fire Station.  The worry is that the proposed arrangements could delay the arrival of an appliance where rural areas are concerned with the further damage, or even loss of life that might result.  This Council has resolved to write in support of the retention of the present service.

A similar situation exists relating to out of hours GP services especially concerning those without transport.

For those of you, especially in Crick, who are wondering if the red and white posts in the central reservation are ever going to be removed, we regret that there is still no sign of progress.  The purpose of mentioning the matter here is to let you know that it has not been forgotten.  We will continue to press for replacements more in keeping or re-instatement of the central reservation (if that is possible) given that further work will be carried out on the railway bridge from time to time.

There is further evidence of inappropriate vehicles using Gray Hill.  Can we remind anyone considering using 4 x 4’s and other off road vehicles that these are not permitted on the Hill.  This is a special habitat and one of the only heath lands of its type in Wales.  Please respect it.

This year the Caerwent show is to be held on 19 August.  Whilst this is a little way off it will soon be upon us.  It is usually well supported so let’s hope for a good day.
