Caerwent Community Council

Chairman's Report

JULY and AUGUST 2003

Residents of Caerwent especially are asked to be careful in the area of the old school. It has been reported to us that stones have been falling out of the wall and causing a hazard on the road. CADW have been informed as have the Highways but please be vigilant in any event.

It has been suggested that better seating for the elderly be provided at bus stops. Does anybody have sug- gestions where we should consider additional seating? Please let us know.

Questions have been asked regarding this Council's approach to planning applications. The position is that we are asked to provide local feedback in addition to expressing our own views on the impact of the proposal on the immediate area, or the area as a whole depending on the application. Care is taken to ensure that proper consideration is given to each application, but we acknowledge that sometimes the applicant may not agree with our views or those expressed to us. In any event, we can only pass on these views to the Planning Authority who have the final say and can, of course, choose not to adopt the recommendation we make.

We regret to say that deer poachers are at work in the Gray Hill area. Should anyone hear anything about this, then please call the police.

How is the 50mph zone settling down? Should it be extended along the length of the A48? Your views please as we need to raise the matter with the Highways in the near future.

Concern has been expressed about the apparent changes to postal collections. It seems from the plates on the boxes that there is only one collection each day This is not the case but is the Post Office's attempt to help the visually impaired.

Councillor Down has on our behalf put in a proposal to put dropped kerbs in Llanfair Discoed to assist disabled people. Can you let us know please where else these ramps or general provision can be improved? Again we have a meeting with the Local Authority soon during which these matters can be raised.

Work by CADW on the Basilica in Caerwent has been hampered by van- dalism to plant on the site. Please keep an eye on any damage to the Roman site. Such incidents lead to delay and in some cases to project cancellation.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
