The subject of the speed limit on the A48 is the leading matter this month. You will all be
aware that this Council has been pressing for many years for some action to be taken to
reduce the potential for even more accidents than we have already seen. Schemes such as
roundabouts at junctions, particularly the eastern junction at Caerwent, have all been
dismissed as too expensive.
The camera has no doubt helped but there seems to be some
confusion over what the speed limit is at that point. The proposal is that it is 50 m.p.h.
This limit will, if finally approved, extend from The Arches Caerwent to The Foxfields Crick.
Otherwise 60 m.p.h. as the national speed limit applies.
Caerwent also is the centre of a misleading situation regarding the plans the Ministry of Defence have
regarding the strip of land that goes from Caerwent through to Crick. When we have
clarification we will let you know.
Llanfair Discoed has its new noticeboard now and, we are still assured, will get the new play
area fence and gate and the repairs to the bus shelter. The bus shelter and road repair seem to
be taking an age to get done. Pressure is being put on all the time to get this work done but
residents could be forgiven for not thinking so.
Gray Hill has now got its fence, gate etc, the first stage in a proper managed system of
maintained heathland, footpaths etc and over time this will considerably help the
biodiversity of the Hill.
On the subject of the environment we only had one letter to pass on to the Environment
Committee about concerns in the area. Its good to feel that people generally seem content
with matters locally!!
We are still having problems with the footway improvement badly needed behind 'Maybury'
in Caerwent. The latest proposal would lead to a restriction of the road which we feel is
unacceptable.
We are also still trying to make sense of the Ministry of Defence's intentions regarding the Old Gym, the
base for the Youth Club and other activities. Ideally the Caerwent Community Centre Committee would like
to purchase it to preserve it for the community. Many obstacles remain but lets not give up
hope of a good outcome.
Litter - Take it home! That has to be the message at the Trewen and Llanfair Discoed play
areas and bus shelters. The cost of keeping bins emptied is prohibitive. Please therefore do
all you can to keep these areas tidy. The concern that we passed to the Environment
Committee has this in mind.
If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
