Chairman's Report

December 2002

We start this week with our thanks to those who responded to the last newsletter. The subject of the seats at Crick and the Environment Committee's request for comments on what is going on, or not going on, have been raised with us. As we will be in consultation in due course on several topics we would welcome written observations which we will undertake to put forward to the relevant bodies. We are aware of some scepticism over this but please be assured that we will put your views forward.

Unfortunately it takes time, sometimes a long time, to get any movement on matters we raise or are brought to our attention but they are followed up and where possible we get our point of view across.

One such instance is the problem of the disabled ramp behind Maybury House in Caerwent. We have now had the results of the study into the realistic prospect of getting improvements here but problems have arisen. To get the regulations in place we will have to go out into the road. This is obviously going to pose problems of its own. We will go back to Monmothshire County Council for further ideas and therefore it seems that we must accept further delays on this one.

Further pressure is being put on Merton Green in Caerwent. The Ministry of Defence is not in favour of building in the area. However it may be the case that their views will come to nothing. We will keep you informed of developments.

The Caerwent ex-US Army Base site, as many of you will be aware, is the location of the Old Gym building used by the youth club etc. We have pressed the Ministry of Defence for a clear indication of the likely cost of purchasing the property from them or an equally clear indication of how long the community will be able to use it. We still await their reply and will let you know.

On the subject of letting you know what is going on the Council has adopted a Model Code of Disclosure under The Freedom of Information Act. Please contact the secretary with any questions you may have.

Trewen has suffered for a long time from the lack of grass cutting on the approach road. This has now been added to our schedule so should be cut on a fortnightly basis from next March.

Llanfair Discoed will shortly get its new fence and gate on the play area and we are assured the replacement bus shelter and repair to the road will be carried out soon.

Investigations are ongoing with Welsh Water over the Five Lanes flooding. We will let you know when we get an adequate response. In the meantime we are pressing for the water escape routes on the lanes in the area to be cleared to help cut down on flooding in the roadways.

Could the residents of Crick in particular, or anyone who has a view, please contact Councillor Julie Bull about the siting of a bench in the village of Crick. For your information we have already agreed to replace the two benches on the dual carriageway.

Crick, and all along the A48 to the west entrance of Caerwent, could soon be getting a 50 m.p.h. speed limit - more as we get it.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
