Chairman's Report

November 2002

This month we were visited by residents of Caerwent who were concerned that CADW seem to be able to do whatever they like within the area that they administer. This, to some extent, is true except to say that they obviously have a high priority for conservation, public access, safety and the practicality of carrying out their work within the limited budget that they have.
When they propose any project the Community Council and Monmouthshire County Council are asked to consider the proposals and comment upon them. Where possible any suggestions raised locally are taken on board by CADW but they are not obliged to alter their plans. We trust that this goes some way to clarify the position.

Its your chance to comment, observe, criticise, whatever you like - on the services provided by Environment Services of Monmouthshire County Council (this encompasses Highways, Transport, Planning, Public Protection, County Farms and Markets). They want to know whether their priorities are correct, adequately provided etc. If anyone has any input on this please let us know, preferably in writing, and we will pass the observations on by the Christmas deadline.

Late October will see the meeting between Highways and Gwent Consultancy over traffic calming in Caerwent. More when we have it.

We believe that the ramp in Caerwent near the crossroads which leads to St Stephens Close is in need of re-designing. However, there seems to be a problem over any new design in respect of toe Disability Discrimination Act. We will keep you informed.

It is hoped soon that safety work at least will be carried out on the fire damaged bus shelter at Llanfair Discoed. This Council has ordered the replacement fence, gate etc for the Play Area but problems over the insurance looks like causing further delay on the complete repair of the area.

Further grass cutting will take place in Llanfair Discoed from next Spring and also at Trewen alongside the entrance road. We have also made representations, via County Councillor Graham Down, over the standard of grass cutting in the Play Areas and have enquired about any measures to prevent stray balls from the Play Area in Trewen.

Residents of Crick have requested an additional bench near the new monument on the A48 but the area needs to be cleared. Can anyone tell us who owns the land? Are there any views on whether or not this project should be carried out? We look forward to hearing from you.

Further enquiries are being made regarding the A48/Five Lanes flooding, and County Farms have been asked to dredge out the water run-offs to try to reduce the flowing water on the lanes. We will keep you informed as information comes in.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
