Chairman's Report

October 2002

Five Lanes and the flooding that is experienced there has been the main topic this month. It causes great disruption for anyone using these routes but is a very great problem for those living there.
The problem seems to be that water from the Wentwood Reservoir is, when combined with heavy periods of rainfall, coming across the fields and collecting.
Various studies have been, and are being carried out in conjunction with Welsh Water, and it seems evident that major civil engineering work will have to be carried out in the Llanvaches area before we can expect any improvement.
Unfortunately this is unlikely for at least 12 months and so the misery will again be visited upon the residents and travelling public alike.

Caerwent's traffic problems are still the subject of studies by the local authority. More as we get it. Lets hope the A48 gets safer now the speed camera is present.

Plans have now been formulated for gates and fences on Gray Hill and the first treatment of the areas where the bracken has been rolled have responded well to the process. Gradually over the years the area will be extended and natural heathland will re-establish itself.

We have been concerned for some time about the footway behind Maybury House in Caerwent. It is not as suitable for the disabled as it is supposed to be and we have asked the Highways Department to redesign it. We hope to get these drawings for consideration at our October meeting and will advise further after that.

Caerwent's Youth Club at the Old Gym has now heard from the Ministry of Defence that they have permission to buy the building and land. The sum is considerable and lottery funding at least will have to be applied for.

Residents at Crick are to be asked for their preferences for the replacement benches that are going to be provided on the A48. If anyone has any views please see Councillor Julie Bull.

May we take this opportunity of welcoming Steve Parish to the Council as the new member for Llanvair Discoed. Steve will, we are sure, be an active member and will be pleased to take up any matter referred to him.

Some of Llanvair Discoed's roads are now in the process of being attended to - at last. There will be some delay however with repairing the damaged bus shelter due to insurance claims etc, but we do hope to re-instate the fence and gate soon.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
