At last progress on road maintenance - County Councillor Graham Down has been able to let us know the roads that are to be re-surfaced during the financial year. They are the Cas Troggy Road from the A48 to Llanvair Discoed, Well Lane in Llanvair Discoed, the Cwm Road and Highmoor Hill. Work will also be done on the road up to Gray Hill. These are probably the worst roads in the area and this re-surfacing is long overdue. These plans have however been made before and deferred, but we are led to believe that deferment is unlikely this time. On the subject of Llanvair Discoed, or Llanfair Discoed, or Llanfairisgoed, we could go on!! What should be the correct spelling? Does anyone know? We have been advised of up to 9 alternatives. Answers on a postcard please. At our last meeting a concerned resident of the Caerwent Quarry area raised the question of the sale of that site and the proposal to use it as a landfill site with all the increased traffic that would result as well as noise and possible pollution. As yet no proposal has been put to the Council and when it is we will give it very careful consideration indeed. We are well aware of the great concerns of the local residents. We have received notification that a speed camera will be installed on the A48 near to the east junction at Caerwent. Be warned and we have to be careful. There have been far too many accidents there and the speed of traffic along our stretch of the A48, especially in Crick, is still of great concern. It doesn't help when 30 m.p.h. signs are badly sited. The new ones at Llanvair Discoed are badly sited and some still not in place. A complaint has been made by this Council and we hope to get the matter remedied soon. It is to be hoped that the work that is to follow the Caerwent study will be carried out more effectively. Trewen Play Area and Laburnum Steps in Llanvair Discoed are soon to get new wooden bench seats. Also some further play equipment will be provided in Trewen and Llanvair Play Areas. All of this has been kindly provided by the Llanvair Village Hall Fund. There could be some progress on the car parking area at Llanmellin Hill Fort soon. The MOD are talking to CADW to enable this to happen. Eastgate's litter bin is to be replaced with a new one as soon as possible. However, please keep this area tidy in any event. No more to report on the floodlighting of the Roman Wall in Caerwent. We will let you know of the detailed proposals when costings are in place. The damage to the Village Green at Highmoor Hill has been addressed. Bollards will be located there soon to prevent vehicles causing further damage. There are several issues that need to be taken up with CADW relating to Caerwent. A meeting has been requested soon. If anyone has any matter that they would like us to take up please let us know. It was pleasing to see the good job made of the Roman Temple entrance. The War Memorial in Caerwent is to have its railings re-painted and the seat re-varnished. That site is getting a lot of attention from skateboarders. We are very concerned over the road safety aspect of this activity. This has to be an accident waiting to happen. Surely there is a more suitable place to use the boards. If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com. Phil Murphy Chairman, Caerwent Community Council |
