At last the 30 m.p.h. signs have been erected in Llanvair Discoed. It's a pity that they were not put where we wanted them, but at least they are there.
Grey Hill (pictured) is the subject of a rolling programme of action to try to improve the bio-diversity there. Stage by stage it is hoped to clear areas of bracken to encourage the natural vegetation of grass, bilberry, heath etc to re-establish itself. There will also be careful removal of the birch to improve the view in certain areas and to enable Commoners to re-establish grazing rights, which will in turn help to redress the balance of the natural vegetative state of the Hill.
The owners of the Hill are not willing to allow motorcycles to use the tracks and footpaths on the Hill. If anyone has used these in the past please stop. Horses are also causing erosion of footpaths and there will be restriction on routes available to riders. Should anyone have any suggestions as to which routes should be open to horses then please let us know. We will bring these observations up at the next site meeting when it is called. Signage will be erected with the new code for the use of the Hill. In turn recognised pedestrian routes will be kept clear to improve access, especially to the main historical sites Caerwent has its Eastgate litter bin back - please use it. We have asked the bus shelter contractors to tidy up the area around the new shelter. It is intended, after careful consideration, to floodlight the section of the roman wall at the junction in Caerwent. The preferred option at present is a series of very small lights which will light the feature but not present a traffic hazard. We will keep you in touch with developments which are a continuation of efforts to make Caerwent more attractive to tourists. It was most pleasing to see the attendance at the Playing Fields A.G.M. It is to be hoped that the new members will be able to re-vitalise the Association, which can then have an assured future. Plans are now going ahead to repair the bridge over the stream at Llanvair Discoed. Hopefully it will be repaired before the Best Kept Village Competition. Damage has also been caused to the Village Green at Highmoor Hill. It is proposed to erect bollards to prevent a re-occurrence. It is proposed to erect a large telecommunication monopole at The Cayo, Llanvaches. This Council has supported Llanvaches Community Council in its opposition to this proposal. Hopefully in next month's issue we will be able to report on the Highway Maintenance schedules. Lets hope we are going to get the action we deserve.
