Chairman's Report

April 2002

This year with foot and mouth hopefully behind us there should be some activity on the hills and various other areas where public access has become difficult due to the vegetation not being kept in check during last summer. Llanmellin Hill Fort is now cleared and well worth a visit especially now with Spring wild flowers in evidence. Just a reminder to those who are unsure of how to get there, go up the track opposite Coombe Farm.

The hill fort will be the subject of a guided walk on the May Bank Holiday. Full details (and a map) can be found in the Caerwent Historic Trust newsletter section.

Another area is Gray Hill. Monmouthshire County Council are planning to carry out biodiversity schemes up there. The paths to the stones will be improved, or at least cleared, and various other sites, now under scrub will be examined to see if they can be economically cleared or at least made more assessable. Sites such as the ancient settlement near the ridge could also be excavated in due course. A meeting will soon be held with Owners, Commoners, and other interested parties to decide what can be done. More information as we get it.

Don't forget if you have any proposal for Community Projects in Trewen or Llanfair Discoed, the Llanfair Village Hall fund wants to hear from you. Please contact Betty Blatchford to discuss any ideas so that she can put them before the Trustees.

It has been proposed that the site of the old bridge on the junction of Castroggy Road at its junction with Cwm Road be cleared to expose the old structure. Possibly to create a picnic area there, but this is only a thought at this stage. We will let you know what progress is made.

Llanfair Discoed is almost about to get its 30 MPH signs. Please take note of them. There is still a tendency for some to drive much faster in this area.

On the topic of speed etc, the money set aside for the feasibility study on Caerwents problems is now in the 2002/2003 budget. Do you have any constructive views on this? If so please put them in writing to us and we will make sure that they are taken into consideration by the team doing the study.

Crick will be monitored for speed again soon. Efforts are still being put into getting some sort of plan to reduce the traffic problems on the A48. Further along a study is being made on the impact that traffic is having on the Welfare Centre Site. More as we get it.

The litter bin problem at Eastgate had not been solved at the time of writing. Reminders have been sent in so lets hope we get some action soon.

It is proposed to look into the possibility of flood lighting of the Roman Wall at Eastgate. When we get a better idea of how this might be done we will let you know.

It was with great concern that we heard of the problems of the Caerwent Playing Fields Committee getting worse. Lets hope that new blood can be injected into it to ensure that its work continues. It would be a sad loss to the Community if its activities were to cease.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
