This month expressions of concern were raised over the proposed developments at the MoD site. There is little that can be said at present in view of the fact that detailed proposals are not yet to hand. This Council has commented on the current use of the Welfare Centre on the A48 suggesting that it could be better sited within the overall development and that great care must be taken when predicting traffic flow and access. We are keen not to add to any of the existing accident prone areas. The police have asked people to be vigilant regarding a white transit van with ladders (not an uncommon sight) that has been acting suspiciously in the area. Perhaps, if there appears to be unexpected activity somewhere, a telephone call to the police would be advisable. They are always keen to be called even if the outcome is innocent. At last we appear to be near to the 30 m.p.h. signs being installed at Llanvair Discoed. A plan of the scheme has been produced but this Council feels that at least one of the signs should be re-sited to extend the scheme. This would introduce the restriction further down the Cast-Troggy Road where there are bends with limited visibility. The Trustees of the Llanvair Village Hall fund are inviting suggestions for suitable projects within Llanvair/Trewen to spend the remainder of the fund on. If anyone has any thoughts please pass them to us or in writing to Mrs B Blatchford, Witchwood, Llanvair Discoed. Progress has been made regarding litter bins at Caerwent. The Playing Fields Committee will be ensuring that the bin sited to the west of the fields is emptied on a regular basis. The bus shelter contractors have been instructed to repair or replace the bin at Eastgate However, litter is not the only problem in Caerwent. Dog fouling is becoming more and more of a problem. Would members of the community take care when walking their dogs not to leave any mess. It is a health hazard as well as being unsightly. We are assured that the long running saga of the filling of potholes and the general improvement of the surface of the lane on Gray Hill is soon to come to an end! That stretch of lane has been very bad for years. However the general state of the road surfaces throughout the area is getting worse by the day. Plans to deal with a lot of the bad spots keep getting deferred due to lack of funding. We continue to press for as much remedial work to be done as possible and hope that persistence will pay off. The results of the consultation over catchment areas for local schools have been received and it appears that with some slight amendments they will remain as they are, much to the relief of many. We were pleased to get some responses to our appeal for potential users of the old Caerwent school. Hopefully there will be more to report soon. Disabled access to the south wall, west gate and the Motte ("The Tump") is to be improved at Caerwent. Much of the work planned for last year was held up due to the Foot & Mouth outbreak. More news as we get it. If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com. Phil Murphy Chairman, Caerwent Community Council |
