Chairman's Report

February 2002

Concern was expressed by a member of the public about the litter in Caerwent this month. Despite a new bin being placed at Eastgate, which disappeared within 24 hours, a regular arrangement with Community Services to tackle this matter is in being which at least sees a clean up every month. Clearly if people are removing the bin the problem will persist. Perhaps members of the community could be encouraged to keep the area free of litter in any event.

Caerwent also has a potential problem with the running of the Playing Fields Committee. The present members are looking for some help. They feel that some new blood would be beneficial and are approaching other organisations for ideas on how the community in general, and their organisation in particular, can be better supported. This Committee works very hard and is composed of dedicated people who very much have the community's interests at heart. Would anyone be interested in helping, either directly or in some other way? Please let us know.

Traffic calming is on the cards again with £110,000 budgeted for a village enhancement scheme for Caerwent This will probably see the light of day in 2003/2004.
£10,000 of this sum is allocated to a feasibility study. Local groups are asked to put forward any views, at present to this Council, but possibly Monmouthshire County Council will take representation on to a Steering Committee. More on this at the time.

Many of you will have noticed the work going on near the roman wall at Caerwent. The Motte ("The Tump") has been in need of cleaning and stabilising for some time. It is intended that the work will be completed by the end of February. The grass will be re-instated on the southern approach to the wall and CADW hope to leave the area more open than it was before.

CADW have informed us that they do not intend to sell off the old school in Caerwent. However they cannot afford to develop it fully in the near future and would welcome working in partnership with an enterprise or group who could make use of part of the building. We would be pleased to hear from anyone interested - telephone 01291-424802.

If anyone wants to e-mail the Council on any matter the address is CaerwentCouncil@aol.com.
